Photoshop tutorials, v9.0 (CS2) ???
My photoshop skills suck. Does anyone have some links to tutorials so i can improve my gallery designs? Text effects especially.
I found a few tutorials but most were for version 6.0 so the step by step procedures weren't really relevant. I have version 9.0 (CS2)

There are a ton of decent tutorials. Problem is they are scattered about so best is to do a google search. It helps to type in what you want, for example.
"glass buttons photoshop tutorial" or "grunge text photoshop tutorial" Also remember, there are 20 different ways to do anything in photoshop. So if one tutorial seems overly complicated, find another one because there is a good chance they will use a different method. For text effects, starting with a font that comes close to what you want helps a lot. http://www.dafont.com has a bunch of great free fonts but you may have already heard of it. If you know what look you want, let me know and I can probably recommend a tutorial. |

One of the best things I think you can do is purchase one of those adobe "Classrooms In A Book". I usually run through one every three or four versions just as a refresher but they're the best things I've discovered for building basic skills and they're laid out in a fairly easy to follow order chapter by chapter where you're building on things you've just learned. It doesn't take very long to run through one if you're ambitious. They're in most major book stores or you can probably order one from amazon overnight. They come with a CD that gives you projects to work one starting from basic to a little better than that.
Problem with web links are they're usually scattered about and you can't really get the basics down since photoshop is so involved. You could actually buy books and books and books just on various aspects of it focusing on various imaging trades

I figure I'll just try a new effect with each new freesite I make and eventually I should be able to teach myself what I want to be able to do.

Best way to learn Photoshop is to fool around on your own like you said to learn where all the main tools and menus are then start to work with tutorials to learn the techniques to make the image in your mind a reality.
The reason I say this is because many of the techniques are not intuitive at all and most people will probably not stumble upon them. For example, to get rounded corners you need to open an alpha channel, apply a gaussian blur, then adjust the levels to make the lines crisp. I doubt anyone would figure that out on their own, I know I sure didn't. By the way, there are some great photoshop magazines that always have great tutorials. Much of it is super advanced but it can give you some great ideas. My favorite is Advanced Photoshop which is in most book stores, plus it comes with a CD that has all the tutorials along with brushes and other goodies. http://www.advancedphotoshop.co.uk/ |

There is an excellent website that I have been a member of for a couple years called Lynda.com ( www.lynda.com ).
They have outstanding multi-media (Quicktime) tutorials on many useful applications such as Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Photoshop, Illustrator and many more. What do you need to learn to do in Photoshop? |

I could also add that 3D communities frequently publish an enormous amount of inspirational Photoshop tutorials by PS-addicts and professionals alike.
www.renderosity.com is one such community and there are hundreds of others. |
