Mail Options
I'm wondering what you all do with regard to your mail programs. I've recently changed servers and I had a nice program, but now one that's not so good. I understand there are other avenues, I'm just not certain what they are exactly. I want to keep my same addies intact, is there something I can include in my new host or does it have to be external, and how would that work?

Do you mean the program you use on the server to manage your email accounts?
Or are you talking about the email program you use to retrieve and read your emails? And there's no reason why you can't keep the same emails. |

Right, I mean specifically that I used the Horde mail program. It was suggested to me that I use a program like Thunderbird, which I downloaded last night but haven't installed yet. Is it self explainatory when I install, or is there something I need to know with regard to setting it up through my host.
What programs do you all use?

I use plain old outlook express. Never have any problem with it, so why bother with anything else?

In order to find the SMTP and POP addresses, search the website of your Internet access provider. There should be an Email/Help page somewhere on their site.

You need to talk to your host and ask them what your mail server is. Sometimes it will be your domain name with mail in front of it like this: mail.domain.com Other times, it's something else.
You must have the outgoing set up right. |

Doesn't your host have some type of a web email where you can read your emails automatically (like gmail and yahoo style) even if you're not setting up your outlook style retriever correctly.
You need to contact their support now, either by phone or however they do it. The mail server is probably building up. This should be pretty seemless and painless to transfer over to a different host. Honestly I'd just stick with microsoft for email sending and retrieving. It's the one program they've created pretty well in my opinion.

Either way my problem has to be a configuration on the server, I get an certificate authentication notice everytime I start Thunderbird. Anyhow, lots of research to do, changing servers has brought many headaches..

Your problem shouldn't be with squirrel. It problem has to do with how you configured your email account with your hosting account you transferred to. It's going to be much easier to contact your host because it should be a simple procedure even a phone monkey can walk you through by reading it off their teleprompter when you call or contact

I went back and forth with my host about 10 e-mails, I don't want to wear out my welcome in the first week, I'm just a ten scent a month ham & egger, hosts are really looking for the dedicated server crowd. Plus, I would be remiss as a webmaster if I didn't go out and turn over every stone for the discovery on my own. However I am at wits end, I just need someone to point me in the right direction. I had Horde with my last host, I set it up perfectly in no time and it was great. Time hasn't been on my side the last couple of weeks, at least I can get my mail... Thanks for the reply...

Well when I first got an account with ATCI I had a few problems. Even now, every time I send an email I get something like "this certificate is unverified, do you wish to use it anyway?"
I just push yes each time. Also, in my outlook express I had to go to the advance tab and click "this server requires secure authentication" or something like that.

So i only use my ATCI mail for conformation and have a separate account for everything else. Why not jump on the bus with everyone else and just use G-Mail? you can send mail as anyone as long as you confirm it.

example.... you set up your g-mail and verify an email address (lets say webmaster@superporno.com). G-mail will send you a conformation mail, you click the link, and then you can send mail from the g-mail admin as webmaster@superporno.com

Don't keep all your eggs in one basket. That goes for hosting too. Balls, I can't believe people with ATCI have email problems considering all I hear is people jerking off over the support and the extra cash they charge to supposedly not have to deal with those issues.
