I see so many of you talking about how to get traffic to sites that are no different than thousands of other sites and very few of you coming up with sites that stand out so that when you do get traffic, you'll actually have something they want to buy.

Bill, look for his name at the library. I think he as a book out with "purple cow" in the title. Plus he has other books on marketing online. My hearing is not that great either.

I watched about half and will watch the rest later.

Definitely good for those new to marketing.

He did leave out one point when gushing about Google and the genius of their ads. Yahoo invented PPC and context related ads, not google.

BTW, the story about the X Ray glasses was interesting but it got me thinking. A while back FOX had a show that it cancelled instantly about a family from the 50s. In one of the first episode they had a story line about a kid who ordered the xray glasses and of course got ripped off so he went to the company that sold them to him and the owner explained the exact story that Seth Godin just told. I thought it was an awesome little scene but I wonder if the writers stole it from Seth or if Seth stole it from the show.

Either way a good little story.

I have a weekly tradition of hitting the bookstore and sitting down to read through one non-fiction book per week and take notes.

Purple Cow was one. I should poke through those notes again.

I've never really heard of him but I'll probably pick up one of his books when I'm out running errands this week.

As for being for beginners, I just meant it was a good starting point to understand real marketing. I'm shocked by how many small business owners think "marketing" is about putting up big signs and buying an ad in the yellow pages, those things are actually promotion. Marketing, like he was saying, is about telling a story and connecting with customers. Apple is a perfect example. Same with SUV ads.

I've always said if you gave me a choice between...

A) Selling a crappy product with amazing marketing.

or

B) Selling an awesome product with terrible marketing.

I'd pick option A everytime.

Forgive me for being a little fuzzy- it's 5am and I just got to my office. There's a word press plugin called "What would Seth Godin do?", and if you asked me what it does right now I'd have to guess. I think it's a related posts plugin or an ad plugin. I'll get some caffeine in me and then I'll remember.



Okay- I went and looked it up. It's a plugin that tracks your visitors, so for the first 1, 3, 5, times they visit your blog, or whatever you want to set it to, your visitors can see the message "Sign up to my RSS feed and get automatic notification when I post" Whatever you want to say, I know there are much more compelling ways to say that, but that is the gist. You can even set it so everyone sees it forever.
