Quality vs. Quantity
This question has probably been asked before so my apologies if I'm adding to the redundancy.
After browsing through a few threads, I'm finding there are quite a few people that run multiple sites. Maybe because I'm a newbie it's hard to fathom because I can barely keep up with the one I've got. I guess it depends on what you are building but I would think having several blogs running simultaneously would turn into a cluster fuck -- but maybe that's he point. Is it as simple as thowing up as much porn as humanly possible and people will keep showing up and clicking on it. After a while you have to see a loss in quality on all fronts (design, content, etc.) which I would think affects the bottom line at some point. It makes sense that people like to run multiple niches or something to that effect but you can't really cover everything...I would think you would have better numbers running one good site vs. several average to low grade sites. |

Hi there hendo, welcome to cozy! As to your question, yes there are two schools of thought on this.
Some have hundreds of blogs, I call them splogs. They are, as you say, low grade splogs littering the net. Do they make money? Yes, but only in a scatter shot way. If you have enough shit on the sidewalk, people will step in it from time to time. The quality of the traffic is not that great, unless they link them all and make a huge hub for them. In any case, they all look the same and work by just being in the way, so to speak. I myself go for the big, quality type of sites. I have only 6 sites, and I find I can't give them as much time as I want, because I do quality post on them. Take a peek at my main site in my signature, it's a big site. From that one site I get almost all my sales. It gets lots of quality traffic, which translates into sales. So, myself I would say try to make just a few big, quality sites. Also make it a niche site, not just one big general porn site. Finally try to link a lot to other quality sites. Many try to just got the SE traffic. It's good, but not enough for really good and long term sales. Hope that helps.

Hi Bill -
Thanks for welcoming me. I guess it's hard to determine if you are taking the right approach just starting off. When I look at business models that maintain hundreds of websites, I say to my self "it must work or else why do it"? On the other hand, I'm glad to see that this is not always the case and that I can feel good about what I'm doing. Do you have any advise on benchmarking goals? What would you think a reasonable expectation be for a site after year 1 of smut peddeling? |

Some could still be waiting for their first sale in a year, others could be making $500 bucks a week. I myself have only had a real porn site for about 7 months, and I make around 150 bucks a week on it. I hope to double that in 3 months.

The answer depends on the person running it. Are your skills in computer/Internet or design or porn?
Some can put up 100s of sites with little knowledge of what they are selling and the quantity makes it work, some can design a site to look good even though the content is poor and some can do neither of these yet know the product and buyer so well their failings are not noticed. Then it depends on those around you and what the competition is. Over the last three months and the problems we faced, our skills and position in the business and the market today we have decided to shoot porn only we can do, will sell and market that. Whether we sell it to the surfer direct or partner with another more skilled at marketing is a decision we will make later. Depends on who we can partner with. This is a solution we can do that will suit us. Will it suit you? Only if you have the skills and resources to match us, if they're different you need a different direction. One of the problems with the boards is the people who think there is one answer to any question. Only you know the answer to your problem.

Good points Paul. I understand there is no recipe for success here.
The truth is in the numbers, so until I have some concrete results, I will have to just "feel" out for what works and what doesn't. |

That's not the case at all. I'm not trying to learn what you do and have it work for me.
In my case, the point I was making is that since I run a blog, I will have to compete with other bloggers with simular niches. Since that is the case I will need to determine what actually works for me and try to seperate myself from other bloggers. I don't feel that the porn part of the blog (meaning images and such) can be the main focus because everyone has that. My personal opinion is that I will have to offer more than that, some quality content that people will come back for. However, if this is not a viable approach and I should just create as many blogs and pages as possible in every niche imaginable because history has shown that this is what works, tell me. That way I don't waste my time on something that is a dead end. |

I also know some who have just one single big blog, or site, and make tons of money on it too. So it really depends on the best way for you. Me, I work slow and get stressed when I have too much going on. So for me, a few big sites I can control on my own work better. Since I have so much content and pages in it, I rank higher than the other hundreds in SE words. Also I have more room for many more quality links, which is very important. I have sections with their own sidebars and pages, so instead of one big spammy link page I have many and scatter them around. Each section gets it's own quality traffic from links dealing with just that sub-niche. But what do I know?
