Does anyone here use Twitter for incoming links?

Or for promotions? Any tips?

I have found it useful for networking and finding out what's going on... I think it could be good on the incoming links.

Hi, what do you mean "incoming links"? Do you mean people coming in from twitter to your site? Yes, I think that is pretty good for that provided you have a nice following. That's the rub. Just signing up to twitter gets you nothing but the effect of watching paint dry. I know several bloggers that claim that their #1 referral source is twitter but like everything else it takes work. Start by folllowing people like @calliesimms for instance. I also know there are people promoting themselves and their site. Take for example @bambidollface. Have to be real and not overly "spammy'. My question to you is what do you think about Adult twitter clones like twatr and boobik ?

I don't understand twitter.

Here's what I see/know of twitter

You get a sidebar which you update which lists what you're doing on a daily basis blow by blow as in

9am - Had a cup of coffee

9:30 - had a shower

10am - walked the dog/chinchilla/anteater

11am - drank a pint and worked on my pron sites

How can this kind of application possibly help someone actually in it for cash more than fun?

And even for fun this look Booring!

Well, on the surface yes. That is the literal application of twitter,but it goes well beyond that If you look at the composite stream it really isn't used like that by the majority of people. To really understand it you have to get over the "what am I doing' utility of it. I use twitter to learn, ask questions, personal/blog branding, social networking. The problem is, for a newcomer, it takes a bit of patience.

Yes, people coming in and just linsk to the site, from another site for PR/SEO stuff.

I don't know. I would like to check them out. We'll see if it does me any good. I have likes Twitter so far for the networking I have already accomplished. It is worth that to me.

I am guessing that like any tool, the others will be the same... It's in how you use it.

It's not the sidebar, but the twittering itself getting to others that helps.

I have found many interesting blogs and ideas and business opportunities through tweeting.

Sometimes people respond to me, I often respond to them.

It allows people to keep up to date with my stories and how they are progressing, and gives them contact with me. I tweet about 4-5 times per week, not all day like some, although that could be good...

I may try tweeting more, see if that has an affect on my number of followers.

<nods> Yes, it does... Worth it, and yet another stream of people, no matter how small. After all, a hundred streams of 10 people still makes 1,000 more than you had.

And it's not much effort.

I'd like to look into tweeters that allow me to schedule ahead of time. Then I might tweet more often, see how that raises my followers/clickthroughs...

I guess it depends on what you're linking to from Twitter. Twitter is a good way to get hits on blog posts but I stop following anyone that uses Twitter strictly for promotional purposes so I don't recommend doing that. Throw in a link to a blog post occasionally but if you don't plan to use Twitter for what it was intended and think it's going to be a good way of promoting your site, you won't get far.

When Twitter is used as it should be - as a microblogging tool - it is really quite wonderful but far too many people try to use it for promotion or else do like Phuchbunny said and post 20 times a day to tell us when they're sitting down to take a shit or closing the door to their car. Any time I follow someone I always read their past tweets first and if they're interesting I follow them, otherwise I don't, even if they follow me.

I agree. I try to say interesting things, post sexy ecards for odball holidays, etc. I have recently started noting some of my thoughts in developing stories and so on...

I think it is a good tool. I am happy so far... getting to know people and finding communities and happenings I would not have found otherwise.
