Google Chrome

I just downloaded Google's new browser. I haven't been using it long enough to really form an opinion but I like the minimalistic layout and damn is it fast. There is also a built in phishing and malware filter apparently. There is a check box when you install the browser that asks to allow Google to track your surfing habits which I didn't check but I'm wondering if they'll track them anyway.

Been fooling around with it for about a half hour now and so far I'm liking it a lot.

Was the surfing habits box pre-checked?

I may try it. Looks like they're going to force updates on you whether you want them or not. I'm not fond of that. Does it have an easy-access uninstaller?

No, the box was not prechecked.

Tit, I don't know about uninstalling but I'm sure it's easy enough to do and you don't have to set it as your default browser so switch back to FF if you don't like it.

The scrolling on my laptop was so much faster than FF I actually just had to go into my control panel and set my scroll speed to it's slowest setting.

Cool, I just saw the article this morning about it, glad to hear it's working out for some. I'm going to dowload it tonight when I get home, if it doesn't crash like FF did then I'll be a happy surfer.

PS: Hammer, my guess is that google will indeed still monitor your surfing habits.

I sort of suspect that in the back of my mind too but since they have a checkbox with the explicit request to monitor your habits, I find it unlikely that it would be legal for them to monitor anyone that didn't check the box. Once you install it you can check to see if the box is checked or not in your setting so it's not like they can say you checked it when you signed up on a form you never see again.

So far I'm really liking this browser. It's super streamlined and very fast.

Google searches are nice because you just type your search terms in the url window.

Security seems to be tight and I've already run into two sites I've visited before that give me warnings and a complete list of the malware that has been detected being installed from that domain.

Another nice thing is that when you have multiple tabs open and for some reason a site in one tab never loads or crashes, it's only that tab which is affected because each tab runs as it's own operation. So you just close that tab but it doesn't crash the whole browser.

Thanks for the break-down Hammer, I'm quite certain my FF crashes are tab related. Now I'm excited about trying this new browser, sounds like a good one...

One thing some of you may not find out right away and that's the "home" button. There isn't one. Or at least not at first. But don't worry, you just need to check a box in the options.

Click on the wrench in the upper right hand corner and select "options" from the drop down. Then on the "basics" page check the box that says, "Show Home button on the toolbar" and voila, you'll have a home button in the toolbar.

Not too bad. But you knew they would start to surface. The test will be to see how fast Google responds.

Here's another little snippet excerpted from a review, they know you perverts are hard at work, lol...

"Chrome has a privacy mode (think IE 8’s now infamous InPrivate mode, that the web has unceremoniously dubbed “porn mode”) built-in. "

Back to Firefox until they fix that, i think that gears Open source is a huge security hole after reading about it.
