wp doesn't like one click updater

I was trying to update my plugins and got this error.

The directory /home/sites/client311/bbwnastycams.com/htdocs/blog/wp-content/plugins/ is not writable by Wordpress.
You may need to assign permissions 666, 755 or even 777 to your "plugins" directory (depending on your server configuration). For more information on what file permissions are and how to change them read Understanding file permisssions.

Mine are supposed to be set to 755, but I think I need some extra help here. I really want to use the one click updater and to be able to push the upgrade to a new version button and have it actually work!

Hi there. I get that too and am not sure what to do. My folders are set to 755 and I'm not going to set them at 777.

It seems to be saying they need to be set at 777. If that is the case then I would not use it. Besides lots of those plugins are fine without updating them. Seems like the more you update stuff in wp the more things break!!

Good, I'm not the only one either! I'm taking a blogging class kind of thing, and they showed how to upload plugins and things on the web host they recommend- and I'm certainly not trying to slander ATCI here- but that host doesn't have the problems with permissions that we seem to have with ATCI, and I think it's because their servers are different. They have a different way of doing things and all it took was one command and the blog was writable. I don't know if that's unsafe as far as the hacking, or whatnot, but on the video tutorial it sure looked easier!

I don't understand anything about servers except they hold our websites, and what I know about hosting companies is I need to stay with the one that is patient with noobies and has great customer service, and that is ATCI.

So, I'm sure this would be easier if I just had more knowledge about the server side of wp. I guess I'll keep studying...

A hosting company that seems easy to upload stuff to it is NOT a better one. If it's easy, it's because they are setting permissions too low, allowing hacking.

On godaddy I helped my Uncle set up a blog after he got an account from them. You could write all the theme pages right in your browser without changing anything.

Unless I'm wrong that means they are set to 777, which means anyone can go in and change it anyway they want. All you have to do is contact ATCI and ask them how to do it.

But I think all you have to do is set the folder to 777, update, then change it back. The key is CHANGE IT BACK! Setting it to 777 so it's always ready to upload to means anyone can and your going to pay dearly for that one time convenience.

If it an't broke, don't fix it. If your plugins work, don't upgrade. If you want to, download the newest one and over write or delete the other one and replace, simple.

Thank you, Bill. I was wondering if ATCI's set up was safer than what the course was recommending. I'm not going to switch hosting companies, ATCI has always treated me right.

Thanks again!

most likely you will need the directory set to 777 so user apache can read/write/execute. be sure to change it back once done.

do you have a link to the video tutorial you are using?

It's a paid class so I don't know if I'm allowed to share it or not. I'll email their support today to find out if it's ok. Otherwise, I'll watch it and I think I'll be able to explain it in an understandable way.

Thanks.

Their support is down, imagine that.

So basically, with the host they use they use the C Panel 10 interface and use Fantastico Deluxe to install wordpress blogs. Fantastico doesn't really look scary or technical (less threatening to beginners, I mean).

To change permissions they go to the .htaccess file (which is already there) and right click, then go down to chmod(UNIX) and set the permissions to 666.

To make a theme writeable they go to wp-content --->themes--->click the folder of the theme you want, highlight all files except functions.php, and set permissions to 666.

So the question I have about hosting is why they automatically have an .htaccess file, and we have to make one? Well, the other question is why they set to 666 and we need 777?

WordPress is reading/writing/executing as user apache.
Your directories are owned by your ftp user.
666 will work if the directories are owned by user apache.

Thank you for the explanation. Is that also the reason we need to create our own .htaccess file?

I'm not sure why they use an .htaccess file in the tutorial.
Seems like it has to do with cPanel settings.
It really depends on what is in the .htaccess file.
