fling.com question
I cut and pasted the code for those ads for fling.com which are suppose to figure out the surfer's location so that the ad reads "REAL Women in YourCity, YourState looking to get LAID!" where YourCity, YourState are automaticly replaced with the surfer's city and state.
When I first tested the code, it inserted Las Angeles, CA which is not where I'm located. When I tested it again a moment ago it says Yuma, AZ (much closer to where I'm at). Is this normal? Is the script something that gets close enough most of the time? Or could I have done something wrong? I Just cut and pasted the code. |

If the ad is displaying, then you did it right.
Geo IP targeting isn't always perfect. |

GEO IP targeting actually works on the location of your ISP.

It can actually be REALLY imperfect.
If someone were to send GEO marketing at my work in Berkeley, CA, the ad would show for Los Angeles (400 miles south) as that's where our T3 ISP is based.... For the most part though, it's pretty close, often times dead-on, and really cool technology! I like it, but it's not perfect by any means!

I think it's getting more and more accurate. A recent Fling ad I surfed across gave me the following message.
"There are no hot singles in Chicago who are interested in meeting you" |

It all depends on what Geo IP db they are using. If they are using the default db from maxmind it is not 100 precent accurate.

Given that they are imperfect, are geo-ads really worth it? My Fling ads rarely show the correct location for me. Unless its 100% spot on surely its offputting to the surfer knowing that he is being bullshitted to? If I'm being told that there are horny girls in a town 1000 miles away wanting to screw me, I'd be inclined to think that the whole thing is about screwing me.
I would have thought most surfers would be savvy enough now to realise its just geo-targeting and that the profiles or the girls on the banner aren't from your city or perhaps even country. I guess they do make a difference (not that I've noticed, but I don't generate huge sales). It probably works more in a 'catch your eye' kind of way. |

I think if guys actually believe girls named "teenslut69" who take naked pictures of themselves and post them on the internet need to use a paid service to find guys to fuck them, I doubt the somewhat imperfect geo targeting is going to set off any red flags.
I'm shocked at how well dating sites do when they are virtually all scams, and so obviously so.

I think it is really the fantasy that sells, not the reality. The surfer is buying into the fantasy that some girl named "teenslut69" is living near by and wants to fuck.
