Words/Terms we no longer use (ie: IBM Compatible)

Yesterday I explained to somebody that SWF stood for 'Shock Wave Flash'. It's been years since I read or heard the term shockwave, although it was everywhere in the late nineties.

What other words/terms have gone by the wayside?

Hmmm now that's an interesting topic lemme see what I can think of here xD

haven't heard link farm in a while
netscape compatible - not used anymore
vbscript has finally started vanishing off the face of the web though not sure if you'd count that as a term

....

dos 0.o though it still pops up every grey once in a while in a wrong context

I know there's a lot more but just can't think of anymore guess that's why they're not used anymore

Shit SYSOP and BBS, old school for sure. Oh man those were exciting times. Bulletin Boards were my first introduction to sourcing free porn and I guess social networking!

I think I'd lose it if I had to experience the data transmission rates we had back then! But at the time it rocked!

You an IT Katie?

If so, here's your Tech Humor for the day--
(Yes, this was today......)

Someone put an old portable heater in my maintenance area at work before I showed up.

A FUCKING HEATER!

Yeah, so, em, it has electrical stuff in it so leave it for the fucking IT to deal with.

(I love similar situations involving COPIERS, call the IT guy! Yeah, smart move you dip-shits)

Better yet,

Today, I got asked about missing signatures in Outlook, and the woman looked at me and said "YOU'RE the professional right?".......I told her "I didn't write the fucking program, now you get to figure it out yourself." -- I knew the solution, but she was new and talking to me like I was the janitor even though I'm SysAdmin for the company (5 years), not just an IT guy...

As I walked away I told her, "Any problems with me just contact the CEO, he'll also let you know I didn't write Outlook." (which everyone knows the CEO is also my personal friend, so I can get away with being an asshole to new employees).....

Yay! Tech Humor!

Hehe, I'm actually in R&D, but our IT support was outsourced . . . so instead of calling tech support people just ask me. If you tell tech support that your computer won't turn on they will say "please start NetMeeting and share your desktop with me so I can diagnose the problem" . . .

The people who ask me questions are no better though, referring to any USB storage device as a "floppy drive" (yes, apparently everything from media card readers to external hard drives are actually "floppy drives"). People routinely claim to have "broken the internet" because "[insert major company name] Online is gone".

Shockwave is still around, but Adobe treats it like a redheaded step child compared to flash. It's freaking stupid too because Shockwave is 100s of times more advanced than flash.

Just to give you and example.. this game was built using shockwave.

http://www2.rasterwerks.com/game/phosphor/beta1.asp

Nothing in flash can compare to that but Adobe barely does anything with it. Instead they put their focus on Flash...

OMG!!! This has to be one of the funniest threads in a long time!!!

BBs... Sysop... hehehe... how about configuring autoexec.bat and config.sys files just to get a freaking game to run? (namely 7th Guest at the time)... you basically had to set memory levels to where you couldn't even run your mouse or keyboard drivers!

I think the funniest thing here though is that "20 Meg Hard Drive". I remember when my Dad had one of the first IBM drives like that and told me "there is NO WAY you will EVER use this much space in your lifetime". OMG... well go figure, I was playing games like Zork and "Adventure" text games by Infocom on my Apple IIe with it's 64k memory and upgradable 128k 80-column card.

Times sure have changed. I just remember the delight in his eyes when he saw the first image of Cheryl Tieges in a bikini on that new RGB monitor.... hehehe... who knows how long it took to download that from the timeshare account at work LOL!!

OMG @ floppy drive or disk drive those are pretty much going away. I didn't realize swf was already going by the wayside too really until you said that.

SWF are here to stay, at least for a while.

Google and Yahoo are in talks with Adobe (finally) now on enabling search of SWF content (flash sites).

It was the shockwave aspect that is not mentioned much nowadays.

I reckon CTR screen will become defunct within 3 years.

By then all our old TV sets and anybody who still uses a CTR screen for their computer will have upgraded.

ISDN with it's meager 128k transmission rate will be gone shortly too.
