How does Youporn do the multiple image rollovers
Does anyone know how Youporn does that video preview thing with the multiple image rollovers when you scroll your mouse over the video thumbnails?

It's a simple hover behavior. Insert an original image and insert another on mouse-over. It moves because it's a flash file. Pretty basic stuff you see it on web sites all the time.

I think Latinluvin means how they have more than just two images as part of one rollover.
It's definitely flash, but I've never done it. |

Yeah the event is the mouse over and the result is to cycle through however many images they want displayed.
It could be done in javascript, or as with YouPorn is done in flash. When On2 (Flash media server software) encodes it also generates images. YP simply have a script in place to assign 2 or more of the generated thumbs for every FLV file you can play when the mouse over event occurs. |

Yeah Monica. I was speaking specifically about the number of images that cycles through when you hover your mouse over the movie thumbnail. I really should get off my butt and buy Flash already. If it wasnt for the hefty price tag, I would have gotten my feet wet in it by now. It seems like just about every website today incorporates it in some way.

You don't have to shell out a ton of cash for Adobe Flash to get the job done. Swish is a great little program that'll do pretty well all you need for under $100. It's what we use on our site.

Sorry, this is the one we're using now. It's cleaner than Swish. All you do is convert your series of images to any video file format then convert to flash using the above program then just insert the FLV/SWF file on to the mouse-over behavior in your editing program.

The tube scripts don't have this built in for uploads?
I'm just checking out those scripts now so very curious.

As said previously you can get the same effect in javascript. Even a little easier then combining flash with some server side code if you need it created dynamically; I'm sure there's a plugin for one of the ajax packages that could create the effect. Try jquery or mootools plugin pages. Or if you really want it in flash just ignore this post

Now for a naive question, as I'm just getting ready to make my first flash video trailor. I've had Flash MX for several years but never installed it, would simply just upgrade to CS3 if I decide to use it. I'm armed, assumingly, with everything I think I need to get kicking, flash converter, flash player, etc. Do I really need to be using the Flash software for simply making video's? I'm just getting started with it so any advice would be helpful...

It depends on the type of video you're trying to make. If you're talking about a hand created video with vector graphics, simulated 3d, or anything of the sort then you'd want to use flash or swish.
If your just trying ot make a video into a flash file there are converters out there that are actually easier to use. Hope that answers your question. |

I'm a big fan of Flash and CS3 (AS 3.0) is far better than Flash MX (AS 2.0). But you don't need it if you're only wanting FLV or SWF clips. |
