Fixing Permalinks???

Is there a way to fix your permalink structure if you were to edit a post? For me the url stays the same as when the post was originally made even though the title of the post changes.

I have tried resaving and updating premalinks but no luck.

Also has anyone been able to get the category base and tag base to work properly in the new word press?

my standard custom permalink structure is

/%category%/%postname%/

I was under the impression that if I place something such as "teen" in my "category base" then "teen" should replace "category" in url when post is pulled up in a search from that end of blog. All I get is a 404 when messing around like that.

Thanks

By the way, this is concerning a wordpress blog of course

why not just create a new post and copy the text from the permalink you want to change. Then delete the old post.

if that makes sense?

When you update your permalinks, are you making sure the new htaccess file is getting written? That could be the issue.

Assuming you're using Wordpress it's simple, you just change the post slug. When you rename the page the post slug doesn't automatically update but if you change that to the same thing you named the new page before you save, the url will change.

Be careful though because if other blogs have linked to that article and you change the post slug, the page they linked to will become a 404. Personally I wouldn't recommend changing the post slug unless the article is only very new and you know it hasn't been indexed by the SEs or linked to by another blog.

Thanks all,

Balls,

it will probably come down to what you just suggested.

Monica,

not sure exactly what you mean (have some idea). Also, I think my host handles htaccess in a fucked up way (at least this is what I was told by another webmaster), and I'm on a virtual server. I'm on my way to try out a few different hosts, but mostly for black hat stuff (which I was looking into when I discovered I haven't properly used the white hat stuff yet) so I wouldn't want to use a overly reputable host I might want to use properly in the future. It's a long story and I can't yet compare my expenses and my profits and justify upgrading to a different host even though I know I should.

Hammer,

what you pointed out would also be a good reason not to delete any posts also, correct? The more I try to get clever, the more I fuck things up. Fortunately though this is a good experimental blog (I've had to move from server to server more times than I care to count (which might be some of my problems)). I had it on page one google serps for what I wanted for a good duration, but then it dropped so I moved it and now I'm trying to get it back where it was.

I learned one lesson though, and you can correct this if you want so newbs get bad info. "Don't fix something that ain't broke" meaning if you're on page one of google serps, don't get fucking greedy and try and get on there for something else, or try and crawl from the bottom or the middle to the top.

I have another handful of blogs exactly where I want them and they don't have many posts and I'm not even adding another post to them for fear it will send them to the back of the line.

Oh, one more thing, all. This isn't some blog I'm trying to make matter or anything. I say this cause everyone that answered seems to really care about blogging and quality of their blogs.

I'm just trying to get it to where I want it for certain keywords (and then place it on auto rotate - yes this is working for me) that will pay me back the cash I expect when I have it in the right spot. So I guess really it's a splog. I would blog about a monkey's shaved ass if it could make me a dime, but I'm not sure I could keep making quality posts about that subject if that makes any sense or makes any difference.

I'm doing the same with some older blogs that are pretty stable, but recently I added some new posts to more recent blogs that I THOUGHT were right where I wanted them and had a huge drop in traffic.

That's exactly why I'm going to leave these others alone. At least until I can get the ones I lost to crawl forward again. I do leave them on rotate though, and even wondering if I should do that or just remove date referrences

I've been reading about this -30 penalty lately and it doesn't seem to be a clear penalty, but seems to have something to do with over optimizing (as jim suggested in another thread) and/or automation.
