I plan to get another monthly plan for one of those broadband wireless cards for my laptop. I will be moving out of the girls home in 3 months, plus visiting up in Vermont. Since I watch no TV I never have cable.
So in my case using a PC card seems like the best deal. It use to be they were unlimited, but now I see for verizon they have a 50 GB limit. Do you think I could use up 50 GB of bandwidth a month? Pictures would be the biggest problem, as they use a lot. I suppose on a day I'm downloading a crap load of pictures I could go to my local Panera that has free wifi and use that! SO do you think a webmaster could burn through that, or do you think in most cases I would be ok??

Whoa! I've never heard of "buy bandwidth as you go."
I could blow through 50 gigs in less than a week, and that doesn't include surfing! Any other options? Does it go by an assigned IP that you could possibly use a proxy to get around? Weird format Bill........

Actually that is starting to be the norm. Both verizon and sprint have a 50GB plan that they seem to think should be plenty for anyone.
Sprint does have an unlimited plan, but I have a sneaky suspicion that once you go over 50GB a month they slow down your speed. Of course most don't use a laptop for all their work like I do. I'll keep looking around and try to find the best way to do this. Thanks!

I was actually forced to do what are trying to do for a while and found that wi-fi hot spots worked the best. You can actually find free ones if you search (even in Vermont I'm sure), though some cause you problems with submissions (proxies being used by spammers and scammers) by getting you blacklisted.
I had subscriptions with T-mobile and At&T (which started as freedom link and got bought out by SBC and then went to AT&T I think). I was going to try that verizon thing but was told (at that time) It wouldn't work for what I did (which was upload and download tons of movie files, but they could have meant the bit torrent stuff which was big at the time). Fortunately the owner of the building I'm staying in decided to have time warner installed (yeah, I know don't get me started). Anyway, verizon might be fine by now and the advantage is you're supposed to be able to get on without having to locate a hot spot. (They drove me to AT&T which got bought out by cingular only to be bought out by AT&T again for cell phone service though)

It worked great when I moved here as I kept moving from place to place, so I did not have to change my provider each time.

Well for a verizon plan with a 50GB limit per month it's 60 bucks US. They don't seem to have an unlimited plan.
However sprint has an unlimited plan for the same price, 60 bucks a month. BUT, I would ask them if they slow down the connection or anything if you go over 50 GB a month. The card itself after rebates are about 50 bucks one time to get one. In major cities you get broadband speeds, you have to check to see what cites have that. Everywhere else is a little faster than dial up, but not much. Forget about watching videos or anything with it. So there you go, check to see of course what the coverage and everything is in your area.

50 gigs would be pretty easy to go through in a month IMO

50000MB / 30 Days = 1.66Gigs per day.
Unless your downloading a lot of files I doubt surfing will burn that much data consistently.

So 50 GB would be plenty. |

But the rest of the days I would only use a quarter of a gig, if that. So the 50 gig plan should be ok. Now I can stay with verizon, and use my old verizon card I already have. Thanks everyone!
