What's a pingback?

Hey, I just got an email from wordpress, it says I've got a pingback on a post, and there are url's to click on if I accept it, and stuff. What's a pingback, and what should I accept it or not?

If it's for a penis enlarger, gambling site or an insurance company, or is coming from a numerical ip, I normally ignore them, but it depends on the type of blog you're running and there might be better advice coming at you.

This is an extra but get yourself "Askimet" to block spam and activate it with the code if you haven't already done so.

I'm not sure what PP is talking about but if you allow comments on your blog you will get pingbacks. Pingbacks are notifications that someone has linked to your article and they usually show a bit of the text they used on their site along with the link. Pingbacks are a good thing but whether you decide to show them in your comments or not is up to you.

Well, i am not hammer, but the threadstarter didn't mentioned spam with 1 word, you did. He asked what a pingback is, and i think Hammer covered it pretty good.
With a normal understanding of internet i guess most ppl won't approve spam attacks in any form, be trackbacks, comments or any other ways.

What denotes this as spam as compared to your everyday pingback and post (which there is probably far less of than this type of pingback?)

Oh hey, by the way. I wasn't trying to be a smart ass. I was seriously asking if I should have been checking and approving those email notifications. I'm taking from your tone I shouldn't have been and those are the type of emails I was assuming the poster was receiving and asking about, but I might be wrong here and did tell them that they'd be better advice coming.

Just in case I'm being misunderstood here. It's on me - no biggy from this end.

If I may assume again (I have to assume Viking was saying that example I posted was spam because he was a little too busy licking Hammer's ass to actually make himself clear), that is spam and that's what I thought you were starting to get.

You'll get a lot of those, but you should check them because Hammer is correct that pingbacks are good if you're doing actual blogging like he does where as mostly I toss up a lot of splogs and forget about them and thus I ignore most of my alerts assuming they are mostly spam and not caring about the quality of my blogs or where the links are coming from (again, not certain I should be doing this so maybe Hammer can come back and verify one way or the other). With me it's a time thing.

I posted that example because Hammer said he didn't know what I was talking about. Not sure where Viking was coming from, but maybe he was trying to make sure you understand my example was spam and Hammer was talking about an actually quality pingback (to which I will ask again for anyone who's concerned), "How do you tell the difference?"

Until this is corrected here's my take...

MOSTLY YOU'LL GET SPAM (EVEN ON QUALITY BLOGS), BUT THERE ARE SUCH THINGS AS QUALITY PINGBACKS (TRACKBACKS, COMMENTS, ETC.) THAT YOU WILL WANT TO KNOW ABOUT FROM OTHER QUALITY BLOGS IF YOU ARE TRYING TO CREATE A QUALITY BLOG SO YOU SHOULD CHECK YOUR EMAILS IF THIS IS THE CASE.

Maybe someone can correct, verify or add to this "CAPS" part of my take (like an easy, clear and quick way to tell the difference), but until further notice (hopefully soon), I'd go with what I just said in caps.

I never said that pingback spam was a good thing and the original poster did not ask about it so I answered their question.

When I get an email notification of a pingback that is obvious spam I remove it, however, at least for me, the vast majority of pingbacks are legit.

To be honest I'm not sure if I get any legit ones or not. Although I know what spam ones are, not sure the poster does (or at least didn't).

Serious question (before it's confused as being smart ass). How is it you get mostly legit ones? I would just naturally assume that a blog that gets as much traffic as yours must get, though it would probably get many legit ones, it would get even that much more spammy ones like I get.

I get anywhere between fifty to one hundred trackbacks, comments, registers etc a day and I'm assuming they are all worthless. Some of them are going to blogs of a much higher quality (traffic, design, etc.) than the one there, but I'm just assuming all my alerts are crap cause I'm usually seeing links that are persrciption drugs, casinos, insurance, etc. etc. etc.

My spam plugins weed out 99% of the spam comments. As for trackbacks, I don't know why but I don't get many that aren't legit. Maybe my plugins take care of those too.
