wordpress users hosting with ATCI, question for you
So I'm trying to upload plugins and change the permanlink structure, and I bet you know exactly what's got me stuck! That's right. I can't make it so the file is writable. How can a change this? I tried creating a x.htaccess and uploading it, but that didn't work. I guess I need someone to help me out with that... type slowly, use small words.
Thanks in advance

Do you mean your .htaccess file?
Don't make that writable on the server. Open a text editor like notepad. Copy the code that wordpress gives you when you change the permalinks and paste it into Notepad. Save the file as .htaccess then upload it to your home directory. If you didn't get the code, just save your permalink structure again and it will post what you need to put in the .htaccess file at the bottom of the page. |

Quote:
you will need to upload a blank file called ".htaccess" and change the permission to 755. Then go back into the permalink options in wordpress and reset the permalinks. To change the permission you will need an FTP client or go into ATCI's control pannel and do it from there.

I've noticed in the cpanel that .htaccess does not show up. You can't see it. So I upload a blank page called ass.php, copy the code to it, change the permission to 755, then rename it .htaccess.

If you can't figure it out just hit up the live chat on atci's homepage and they'll walk you through it pretty quick.
I love live chat

Oh, you guys. I'm having one of those nights that makes me think working doubles at McDonalds wouldn't be SO bad... I can only send one message on ATCI's live chat- then my computer won't send any more. This blog is version 2.02 and they suggest an upgrade, but I'm worried about all the problems the rest of you are having with it. Then they said my wp wasn't "owned" by me? They set this one to my client number, and said the .htaccess should work, but now I'm wondering, since I got excited and installed wp on 4 sites, are they going to have to change the ownership on them all?
Sometimes all this technology stuff gets me blue... I guess I'll just go and eat some worms...

You need to submit a support ticket asking them to change the ownership of that file and such back to you.
For some reason, there are ownership issues at times, and they have to go in there and change them back. |

You really should start with a new 2.5.1. It is much better and has all the security holes filled, at least the ones we know now.
I just uploaded 2. Yes put in a ticket and let them take care of you, we all have those questions when starting out.

I opened a ticket with ATCI. Those poor guys.
So you guys- where exactly does the .htaccess file go? What folder? In one of the wp folders, like wp-admin, or just in the htdocs folder? Thank you

on the site in question the blog is in htdocs- it's what you see when you go to the url. In another it's in a folder named blog (url/blog). I just wondered if the .htaccess file needed to be inside one of the individual wp folders, or out with all of the wp stuff in the htdocs folder.

It goes right in the main root folder you put your blog. So the one in htdocs, it goes in that. It goes right where your wp-config.php file is, your root blog folder.
