Videos speeds

Hi guys and girls,

I just need a little comment about videos speeds.
I got new video content for my paysites in 5 different speeds listed bellow but would like to offer 3 speeds only (slow, medium, high):
56k
300k
500k
700k
1000k

What’s the 3 most popular speed can u advise on paysites?.

How are you going to vary the speed... by altering the video file sizes? If so, I don't know why you'd want to do that. Most people browsing porn sites today have some sort of ADSL or broadband connection anyway. This is 2008 you know. I think you're crazy if you're gonna offer 3-5 different file sizes for each video on your site. Forget that!!

Most people with ADSL have a capped DL bandwidth of 1.5mbs, so maybe offer 2 settings:

500K Standard
1000k High Bandwidth

I think that 700K would be an ugly in between setting that won't be much help.

If you have users with 56k and 300k requirements, I'd suggest that they have their own issues to deal with, it's not your problem

Most people are smart enough to know that they need a fast connection to join a movie site but a lot of my members will use the fast buffering 300 to see if they're interested in that clip and if they are they'll open the 1000.

There are still people who are stuck on dialup and will appreciate the 56k. I spent a long period of time on dialup when I was in the jungle and it SUCKED hardcore to have to try and download movies. It was basically impossible.

I think more important than the sizes though is offering the movie broken into clips that download quickly.

Then, offer full size files in the two or three sizes.

Even more importantly, you want to give surfers the best possible download times while preserving the best quality video possible.

Exactly, that's why 56k is a waste of time. And, jungle aside, if someone can't move up from a dial-up they probably won't be pulling out the credit card either.
Having said that you're right breaking up vids is a good idea.
We recently added Flash. I loads really fast so people can scrub through without waiting too long.

Nice point (300k) about folks testing a clip.....I'm used to where I live, anything slow is basically unheard of (I live in the heart and sole of the computer industry).

Maybe instead of breaking the movies down into a bunch of downloads, use flash.....You can get some decent quality with super-low file sizes and low buffer time. This will help users determine if they want to download the high quality version.

The funny thing is is that I give members two really fast options to stream quick to see if they're interested but the vast majority of them simply "right click and save as" a bunch of high quality vids and then come back and do the same thing with the next bunch.
I thought Flash and WMV streaming would be most popular but a simple download seems to be the way to go. You can only download so many streams at a time so they will download 2 or 3 and while they're waiting look at the pics then start downloading again. Then they're gone after downloading about 6 or so. Then they're back a few hours later doing it all again. It's not the way I thought it would work but that is a very consistent pattern.

Forget about 700. That bandwidth would be better spent offering H.264 (Quicktime) or Flash. it's another option your members might appreciate.
The dif between 700 and 1000 will be negligable.

put vid in flash and you dont have to worry about specific speed

the majority of sites i visit only worry about whether to give the vid in either mwv or mpg

I've been doing site reviews, and notice that most give at least two speed options, sometimes 3. One has 6, 3 for realtime and 3 for WMP.

Also some offer streaming, and one now even offers a download type for ipods!

Exactly. I'd think your main concern would be whether your vids would be set up for pc or mac users (or both). If you're gonna do flash, then that's different.

But most people joining porn sites today have some type of broadband connection and want to be able to download the highest quality vids they can. There's a small minority that are still in the slow speed realm, and you can call me an asshole... but I wouldn't be trying to cater to the small minority of users when I can save time and effort by focusing on the needs of the vast majority.

I'm totally unfamiliar with Mac so forgive me, but is that why sites offer mpg format? So then offering both wmv and mpg is probably important?

To cater to Mac and PC use WMV and MOV (Quicktime) or WMV and Flash.

First you need a converter. This is a really good one for the money. Then convert your file to swf and insert with DreamWeaver by going INSERT>MEDIA>FLASH. You can also convert to a html doc then build around it.
