Death By Blogging

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/06/te...gewanted=print

I'm betting these mainstream bloggers work way harder than adult bloggers for their money but interesting reading nonetheless.

For his part, Mr. Shaw did not die at his desk. He died in a hotel in San Jose, Calif., where he had flown to cover a technology conference. He had written a last e-mail dispatch to his editor at ZDNet: “Have come down with something. Resting now posts to resume later today or tomorrow.”

I think the people that have the initiative to work for themselves are more likely to be type A personalities, and prone to stress related disorders.

But I thought the point of blogging was to be able to work from home, not traveling the world getting paid $10 per post, as this article seems to imply.

Most writers are not paid very well. A lot even write for free, hoping someone will see and like their work and then hire them.

Of course this is mainstream stuff, and as always there is a competition for work. Look up writing jobs and you see many places pay 2 bucks for a 500 word post, including researching the subject!

Working for yourself is always a lot more stressful than working for someone. It's all up to you, and many think they need to do more and more to keep up.

Add a wife and two kids who depend on you and that really ups the stress. Damn I'm so glad I am single! I can live on 100 bucks a week right now, 300 a week if I moved out of my friends house.

In the end it's not how much you make, it's how well you live your life. I see many poor Hispanics in my area that always seem so much more happier than the rich guys they work for. Who is really the better off?

Writing, like porn, is very niche specific. Doing IT or political commentaries is like trying to sell teens. Some can do it very well but the market is saturated and competition is stiff.

Location is a factor as well. Financial writers can do well in Hong Kong and Singapore. I know a guy who does OK writing about civil engineering and construction in the middle east.

But I don't think you'll make a fortune as a writer unless you have the next Harry Potter in you.

I'm quite surprised about the money mentioned....

$30k start and up to $70K?

I'll admit $70K is good money, but certainly not worth losing your health over.

Bill, funny you mention..

I was just talking to a friend about this.

When I was actively creating porn sites last year I had a huge savings account (paid by Cozy advice), I paid myself 2 months off in a Europe vacation, came back with a few grand in the bank (porn/affiliate money), ect....

When i got back, however, got sick of looking at HTML and affiliate BS...I went back to being a network IT.

I stopped updating all my sites to go back to being a win2k3 guru.

Now I'm BROKE again!

Well, not broke....but I had a fun year....Now taxes....uggghhhh!

I should really re-think my priorities....

(Newbies, I made many thousands off this board's advice in a year, but it's TOUGH......Make your own decisions!)

Isn't 1 Euro worth $10,000 (US) at this point?

When you get $250/month from dissability allowance and are struggling to find normal job. 10k is decent perspective.
