Sub Domain Versus Sub Directory

I was perusing some older posts trying to edgeikate myself goodly when I came across this one. :-)

I think I get this one but I was hoping for some clarification.

If I owned www.abc.com - I don't but I sure wish I did.

A sub domain would be www.hammertime.abc.com, correct? Basically I can place anything I want before .abc.com? Do I have to buy the domain www.hammertime.abc.com? Or can I simply add the additional sub-domain url somehow to my existing domain?

A sub directory would be
www.abc.com/ledrak/sunfun/index.html
http://www.abc.com/ballsdeep/mynamej...mon/index.html
Correct?
Basically just placing numerous index.html files within any folder of my existing site? Am I getting this correctly?

On a side note, I see Hammer has posted like 5000 posts to this board. Anyone besides me curious to see Hammer's first post ever. Post Numero Uno. I'm thinking it was sometime in the mid 80's and it had to do with a debate of Beta vs VHS, how soon before sideburns come back and the proper lighting to use to see past all the pubic hair. :-)

No you don't have to buy the domain, once you own the say abc.com as you used. Creating a sub domain is typically done using your server side control panel.

It's normally pretty easy to do assuming your hosting supports it. Technically all that happens on the server is hammertime.abc.com is in reality the same as abc.com/hammertime/ but the DNS on the server allows you to use hammertime.abc.com as a actual domain.

Also if you use a sub domain "www." isn't used anymore because that is also technically also a sub domain, but it's a universal one. The real url would be http://hammertime.abc.com

The actual real world difference in abc.com/hammertime/ vs http://hammertime.abc.com is the sub domain is looked at as a totally different domain name. The other is just considered a directory on the original domain, so SE's and so on treat a sub-domain as a separate website.
