I have a site that I use for test on my blogs. Each time I try a new plugin or change something I do it on my test blog first. Saves a lot of heartache on my live ones.
Well a few days ago I really screwed up my test blog, could not even get back to the admin page. So, I figured I'd delete the whole thing and upload a fresh new one. I went into the C panel of my hosting, choose the site and clicked all the files and all to delete. When it refreshed and told me the files have been deleted, I glanced at the site name,,,,,, And looked again,,,, and again,,, and my face ran cold, it was my main Bilinda blog site!!!!!!!! I KNOW I chose the test site, somehow I must have did an extra click or something and it was my main site. So after a lot of "oh fucking shit" swearing I collected myself. For some reason the C panel does not delete the folders, just the outside files like index .php and so on. Even after it says the folders are deleted, they are still there. So, I went into my dreamweaver, which always has a copy of your whole site. I uploaded the files, and prayed not updating my local site would still be ok. Well, everything works fine, and nothing is lost, hot damn! The only thing not working is the post date. If I chose to have my post not show until tomorrow, it will not post it until I go and update the damn date, even using the same date and time. I'll figure it out. SO, back up your files, and make DAMN sure if you use C panel in your hosting you choose the right domain!

With ATCI it's nice because I set my databases to backup daily and then I manually save my entire website either once a week or whenever I'm about to make a major change just in case, and it's a one button click process.

you should have a backup plugin installed.

I have Apache, phpMyAdmin, mySQL, etc. installed on my home computer so it basically runs like a server. Absolutely fantastic for developing themes for Wordpress, message boards, etc. locally, and developing sites in php. Once you get it working on your machine then you can upload it all at once. Saves a lot of guessing and uploading and risking crashing your host's server.
Downside is that it's a pretty steep learning curve in installing and learning to use the stuff. And you're way more likely to have crashing with your home computer (although mine, installed on XP, seems to recover with no data loss). |

I have copies of absolutely everything on my computer, plus the server. And then of course the information from the server is also backed up at the hosting company.

I am sorry to hear that Bill, I did a similar thing a while back. Even when you have
it all backed up it's still a pain reloading everything.

I feel your pain.
I just did that the other day... I deleted a brand new site that I had spent 4-6 hours setting up just the day before, so I didn't have a backup yet. Even though it's only a couple hours work, it really sucks to have good work disappear like that. |
