Advertising fee's

Lately I have been receiving emails inquiring about advertising on my site... I am not too sure what to charge... I do not want to overcharge nor undercharge... these fees can cover my hosting and bandwidth fees so I am very much interested.... any advice on what to charge? ...

Everyone with a decent blog gets tons of those and like Viking said, most of them are spam. Big companies paying people to find them places to advertise. In most cases, if you reply you'll find yourself speaking to someone for whom English is not their first language and has no clue what your website is about. All they know is that they get paid if they can convince you to put up some advertising, and in most cases, they want you to put it up as text so it looks like a blog post or part of a post, tricking the surfer into thinking it's something legit that you wrote about. They also usually want to pay a one time fee for a spot on a particular page and want it to be permanent and for life.

There's a discussion on a blog about this right now and the first email started at offering $100 per paragraph and after some back and forth with the blogger saying, "no thanks" the offer got up to $400 per paragraph. Finally the guy asked the blogger to make him an offer and the blogger said $10,000 and that was the end of the emails.

Never sell an ad spot for a one time for life offer.

Now, in the case of the person you know, you need to base the price on traffic and page impressions. A typical price would be $.50 to $5 per thousand impressions. If you can give him 100,000 impressions a month and want to charge $5/k, then you would charge him $500 a month.

Hopefully this will give you a place to start but the truth is that no one can give you a definitive answer.
