I have a site I never went live with.. It's set up like a babelog using jomla and Aryla. Link

I'm not sure if I will end up using Joomla on it or not, was somewhat of a test. I may just use Blogs Organizer because that's what I use on most of my other sites.

Funny you should ask, I was thinking of using Joomla to build a Tech site (Reviews, 'Ask the IT', etc....) and was wondering if it's really worthwhile before I put effort into it.

Any more feedback from folks?

I am interested in using Joomla for a mainstream site - basically a article type of directory. Would Joomla be suitable?

Yes, go to the Joomla.org site and they have a Site Showcase section. You can find examples of directory type sets there.

Joomla is great for a number of things especially articles. Just installed iJoomla's Magazine plugin for a mainstream magazine site and that was a pretty neat application. Lets you create multiple publications with different templates if you want.

I'd be lying if I didn't say there's a pretty steep learning curve to it though. Once it's all set up it's a breeze to run, but set up is a real pain.

Rocketthemes has a cool application called Rocketlauncher that not only installs Joomla, but installs dummy content. It was pretty helpful in terms of getting familiar with how to configure things.

Learning Wordpress only took a couple days to get a handle on. Joomla took a couple weeks of pacing around and banging my head on the keyboard. Just be forewarned... it's time consuming...

That's great advice. WordPress left me banging my head on the table--got frustrated and went back to plain 'old xHTML/CSS.

I'll take a lookey at other similar content managers before I dive head first and get frustrated.

Thanks for the honest advice Schoepfergeist!
