Google Bombs Still Work

Anyone heard about this?

Remember googling "miserable failure" and you'd get GW Bush as the top search result?

Remember doing it for our smartest man in the world: Hammer?

Type in "dangerous cult" and see why Tom Cruise and John Travolta are probably going ape-shit as we speak.

Best semi-recent google bomb ever!

Also, you know about google-skins like www.googoth.com etc? Good stuff!

I'm sure it still works.. why wouldn't it? A G Bomb typically works much the same as any orginaic site that gets a lot of links in.

They work and I made it to #1 on Google for "world's smartest man" for a few weeks but now I'm not even in the top 20.

That's kind of what happens but you're still #1 smartest on cozy.

"On 2 February 2007, many have noticed changes in the Google algorithm that largely affects, among other things, Google bombs: only roughly 10% of the Google bombs worked as of 15 February 2007. This is largely due to Google refactoring its valuation of PageRank."

Thing is no one knows what goes on in google and their algo. There's some things in this thread that skim the issue but since its related to 'legit' link authority is probably the reason why they work, at least temporarily.

Yeah I love it, especially living with spitting distance of several cathedrals built for the worship of L. Ron.

BTW, EDS, how's your google woes? Any improvement?

oh, yup - seem to have gotten my keywords back to where they were, and improved in some others, so it was a bad lull but came back strong than before.

taking it as a lesson learned though, while I've never ever relied on google, I'm going to focus on gathering as diverse an influx of traffic as possible.

You know, this is what I'm wracking my brains about and why I was flogging the Fleshbot thread to death last week.

If you have a niche specific blog, like your BDSM site, you could potentially get shafted for too much repetition and what not.

If you have a diverse site, a la Flesh, which was the model that was working for my main blog recently, all your hard work can disappear in re to the SEs because one day Google can just essentially decide not to like you to paraphrase Viking.

So you basically run the risk of getting shafted either way you go, a keyword heavy niche specific blog or something that is general that attracts bookmarkers and has diverse content.

I think what Hammer meant re relying on other sources of traffic does not mean your bookmarkers or an occasional re-blogged post or link in. I think it means actually building a branded internet presence. And I don't think that can be accomplished through the ye olde porn blog techniques most of us use.

I suppose I'm still sore over my traffic drop.

I'm also wracking my brains as to how to get that internet presence without the media/branding muscle that Flesh had/has behind it.

I wish I could remember the name of the article I once read about how some blogs rise to the top and others are in the nether regions; this was referring to mainstream blogs, and I find myself discovering non-adult blogs that are outstanding and checking their stats and they get dick despite playing by all the rules.

I could type my butt off with a plethora of interesting posts every day but is that more productive than building a niche specific blog every day? I don't know, it seems lose lose to me today.

Maybe I should go ventibate.

The main reason you want many posts per day is to get the same visitors to come back several times and therefore making your page views 4X or 5X what you really get. It's good for charging more for advertsing and also there is more of chance of a surfer clicking on an ad the more they visit.

Starting off, I don't really see how more than one or two posts per day would be of any benefit. If you are feeling fruitful, just save the extra posts and use those days to build links instead of writing.

A blog starting off from ZERO, and I mean newbie zero, not Hammer zero, is going to take at least a year to start to stabilize and build. And usually more.

Hmmm... Those are all very good points, Jim.

Here are some admittedly stupid questions in response to your post.

Building links. That is indeed key but how many options does one really have? There are link lists, link dumps, exchanging links, etc, but those won't do much for your overall traffic I think, or it will be limited. The point that I'm trying to make is that my guess is you need a tonne of one way inbound links to achieve the branding that I'm talking about and that means lots of interesting articles each day, like Flesh, PLUS some type of branding work.. A Sysyphean task?

Again , I could write my ass off all day but where will those posts get inbound links? How long until someone discovers them? Because they're not "keyword relevant" or what not.

I know some differnet standards apply to adult content but Fleshbot is an example of what can be called a for lack of a better word, mainstream adult blog. How do you get even close to that without another extra push?

You know little green footballs? There are many other BETTER conservative political blogs out there but he got his site branded and is doing stellar. Is it because he gets mentioned in mainstream media? Possibly, but I've gotten plugs on Fleshbot and after a huge surge of traffic, things die down after a few days and that's that.

I know it takes a while but the point is, I'm still pissed about the SE traffic.

And about how Ron Paul is not even being MENTIONED in the news!!!

Gaining inbound links can happen a bunch of different ways for a mainstream site.

If you are talking about a political blog like you mentioned, there are many political forums that you can become active in and if you make good posts, people will follow your sig to your site or you can slyly use one of your articles in reference when responding to a post.

Get into blog discussions. Try to get into a discussion with the author a few times that goes back and forth and build a following. I personally don't do this one, I'm more of message board guy.

Those are labor intensive but the links and readers you will gain will be very natural.

You can always buy links and blog posts.

I know I put a funny political video on youtube and it got over 60,000 views. If I had a political blog I could of linked to it and it would still be sending visitors.

Just piggyback on other popular videos. For example when Hillary cried that one time. Just post your video as a response to some of the more popular ones on the first few pages.

Also, you can get interviews pretty easy then boast about them on other sites. I ran a cycling site a few years back, just for fun and I was shocked how many pros I sent e-mail interviews to and how many filled them out. Guys like Chris Duncan, Brian Lopes, and Hans Rey (Big names if you're into MTB). So for your fleshbot type site, if maybe there is an artist or photographer you like, send them an e-mail saying how much you like their work and ask if they would answer a few questions.

Anyway, just some ideas. Sorry if i rambled a bit. I'm trying some bright new lighting in my office and it's got me all wired out.

Message boards = good call. I'm seeing a bit of a pickup in traffic from 'quality posts' that people link to, including ye olde fleshbot.
