Don't think people pay money to advertise on blogs?

Start a blog about something enough people are interested in and once it has enough traffic you too can charge prices like this.

These are the ad rates to advertise on Perez Hilton's blog.

Standard ad (150x200):

One week: $9,000
One month: $30,000

Hi rise (150x600)

One week: $16,000
One month: $44.000

And before you say, "Yeah, but how many of those ads is he selling at those prices?", take a look at his site and count them.

I count 15 standard size ads and 5 hi rise.

Of course, having 38 million page views a week helps.

Wow, it's pretty plain looking too. Hard to imagine it gets that many hits a day, but I'm sure it does. I already had a breast store ask me what my shopping mall ads go for.

Now I understand why..

within the first six months of Lavandeira's blogging career, PageSixSixSix.com was named "Hollywood's Most-Hated Website" by The Insider, catalyzing an initial surge in its popularity which temporarily crippled its server.[5][6][7] Lavandeira claimed that on July 30, 2007, a seemingly "ordinary day," Perezhilton.com had over 8.82 million page views in a 24 hour period.

I read an article somewhere that talked about the monthly income of Perez Hilton and it seemed to fit in with those ad prices.

By the way, if anyone wants to build a linkbait mainstream site that feeds off of Perez Hilton, TMZ, etc, let me know. I have a great idea but not really the time or interest to set it up. I'll sell the idea outright or share a small % if it makes money. The idea probably needs about 5-10 grand to get off the ground. It's a winner though!

Back to Perez Hilton, I think the success of that site is probably more luck than good content.

His content sucks and so does his hair. I see that flamer typing away at his laptop sometimes at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf across from the DGA building on Sunset & Fairfax.

I'd have to agree with Jim that it has a lot to do with luck.

It also has to do with his choice of content for blogging. Celebrity stuff bores and nauseates me, so I could never do it but that's the main interest in US culture.

Also, he's been on the telly a lot lately which spiked his popularity greatly. A year ago or so I read he made about $300K a year from the blog ad space so that certainly spiked now that he's on gossip shows and what not.

That is why you do not make as much as you could.

You really think his content is no good when he continues to rake in what he does monthly and has spots on VH1?

Yes attribute his popularity to TV when it was his interwebs talents that put him there. I find this fucking hilarious....

Ya Jim his content sucks and its all due to luck. He had a rock fall on his head and it sounded like "brit spears" so he wrote about her instead of his chow chow and what it ate for lunch....

Like I said before... fucking hilarious.

His prices are achievable too. I can sell my 160x600 slots at something very close to that as well.

Honestly. If I had is traffic in my market I would be making a hell of a lot more than
he his on that size too.

Dos, what I'm saying is that if you have a strong enough stomach to do a paparazzi thing and go up and down Robertson to find out where Spears or one of the Hiltons last took a shit one can probably do quite well as a 'celebrity blogger'. Not for me, though.

And of course, there's a lot of money to be made and learn from what he's doing but he has gone from a grass roots paparazzi wannabe to a wholly owned manufactured commodity just like those boneheads he writes about.

Phuckbunny, my intention with this thread was not to upset you, believe me. Somehow I think you missed the point. No one is saying you need to become a paparrazi or die your hair blue.

BTW, it's not just celebrity bloggers that get a lot of traffic. I know a guy that has a fishing blog that is raking it in with Google Adsense.

I probably pushed my point a bit to much last night (opened a 5th last night and didn't stop drinking till it was dry) but what I was trying to articulate is that, while there is a bit of luck in everything, to get to that level takes some form of effort and planning.

To write it off as luck is a bad learning experience for anyone interested.

I myself could never pull of anything in the celebrity market since I am disgusted by them all so I totally understand where you are coming from Phuck.

Let me apologize to Jim too about the stupid comment regarding making money... sorry dude.

Maybe I should rethink my comments on the AA thread

Dostwo, don't sweat it.

As for being lucky, I didn't say it was all luck but what I was getting at is it was more luck than careful planning and awesome content. Sometimes you're just doing the right thing at the right time but whatever it is there is always some luck involved. The skill was that he was able to parlay his lucky break into something profitable.

The key point is that if people think they can make a blog just like Perez Hilton's with two lines of text and a few pictures about celebrities and make a fortune, it probably isn't going to happen. If you look at a site like TMZ, I would say the success of that site has much more to do with skill and content as opposed to luck.

BlogAds is a sweet deal. The problem is they only allow high traffic blogs to sell advertising. I forget the criteria but basically, they operate on a "don't call us, we'll call you" standard.

There are other BlogAd type programs like CrispAds. Also there is an adult one that's run by AVN called AVNAds. Like BlogAds, these brokers allow publishers to sell ad space as well as buy ad space on other blogs.

One can by BlogAds space on popular sites as long as your site/content jives with the terms set by the particular bloggers.

If you're interested in buying space on a BlogAds site, all you have to do is search the BA site, refining your search to your given niche. Check out the prices, find something you like and sign up for a BlogAds account.

I should probably keep my nose out of this thread but I think phuckbunny's point was he didn't do it on the blog alone. The flamer is connected, always has been connected (no matter what he'll try and say or how he perceives himself0 and now he's an out and out celebrity.

He didn't really have to work as hard as you might believe say like someone like Jane Hamsher with that political blog she has which I think offers a little more to society (not that I personally give a shit about that myself)

That's not to take anything away from the blog. I'd surely like to have a blog I could charge that much for ad space on.

I just wonder how much Angie and Brad could make if they tossed up a blog, good or bad content (maybe they have one and I don't know about it).

She's not selling little africans on one is she?

The thing is, if you call Perez Hilton an internet genius, then you have to call Britney Spears a musical genius. After all, she makes nearly a million dollars a month from her music career. The truth is sometimes people do fall ass backwards into success and it's not just sour grapes to say so.

I think the real test will be to see if he can produce another site/project that is successful. If so, then he has proven himself a savvy internet marketer. If not, then I guess he just got lucky. But based on the fact that his whole site is built around stealing copyrighted pictures and adding some doodles on them so he can hide behind "fair use" laws, I highly doubt it's going to happen.

But I wish him the best.

I've noticed that the more famous you get, good or bad, the more luck you seem to have.
