Charging For Ad Space On Blogs - Advice?
Hello,
I stepped away from my adults sites for awhile and once I came back I saw I'm getting something like 600-700 uniques a day, translating anywhere from 15000-20000 uniques a month on my main blog. Naturally, I'm going to start working on things more to make sure I keep said traffic. What I'm wondering now after looking at the stats is if I can make any money off providing weekly ad spots or something. Is something in the 10k, 15k or 20k range too little for a general adult blog to start doing something like that? I don't really know where to begin or the types of numbers involved when it comes to charging for stuff like that. I did a little research tonight and I saw a mainstream blog that had a chart that said 20k uniques a month could net perhaps $100 a week for ad space but that sounds rather high. I'm not sure if rates on adult sites would be different than mainstream rates either. Thanks much for any advice! |

I think 600 uniques a day is a bit slim to begin selling ad space but then again, if the price is right, why not. You might want to check into using Adbrite or Adengage to sell the ad space. Plenty of sites sell ad space using Adengage that have less traffic than you but in most cases it will be in the $.03 to $.01 per click range. Of course you can also sell the ad space yourself on a flat rate basis which would certainly net you more money than PPC will.
I think someone would have to be nuts to pay $400 a month to advertise on a site with 20k impressions. That's $20 cpm and no one has gotten that kind of money on a cpm rate for years. A more realistic number would be $5 cpm or $100 a month.

I'd agree with Hammer that 6-700 uniques is somewhat slim but ditto, who knows. I've been planning on signing up with adengage myself for my main "quality" blog once I started averaging 3500 uniques. I was there for a couple of weeks and then got somewhat shafted during the last google update though I'm sure I'll bounce back.
I believe that you set your own rates and what not through brokers like adengage. I looked at a blog who I haven't exchanged links with yet, but who is in a similar vein to mine and has started selling ad space through adengage a few months ago. He/she has about 20 paid text links up as we speak. According to adengage, the site averages 2500 uniques and his average CPC is $1.14 and and his CTR is 0.02%. Not too hot, but the ads are being sold all the time. He charges under $10 for a one week text link. 20 links x $10 = $200 per week and $800 a month if you can maintain that traffic, so not bad at all. Since I think you set your own price w adengage it doesn't hurt to lowball it like this guy. I'd work on building up a bit more traffic, or start selling space for very cheap. Me, I think I'm going to start selling space once I get it back up to 2500-3K uniques. |

BTW, Hammer, adengage and adbrite don't work on a PPC basis, no? Aren't they just brokers?

In the case of Adengage, you do get paid a flat rate that you set so you're right, it's not ppc, they just list what the average ppc cost is for potential advertisers. Of the two, I would go with Adengage. If someone buys an ad spot from you, at least you know you'll get paid whatever rate you've set.

AUGH Hammer my head is spinning. You just said that Adbrite does do PPC and then said they don't do PPC and that you'd recommend Adengage. I'm just assuming you meant to say Adengage for the not doing PPC part.

Cool, I've edited it to say AdEngage.
I am now drunk with power. I may go edit some other posts. *stumbles off* |

Yeah I thought $400 was quite a bit excessive too. I'll have to check out Adengage over the weekend, never took a look at that one before. Might experiment with some low flat rates too eventually just for the hell of it and see what happens. No harm in trying I suppose.
Thanks for the tips all! |

Feel free to sell anything you like, it is youre site
What is youre conversion on the site on the sponsors ads? I am selling some ad spots with 600-800K monthly views and it is mostly sponsors (yeah, they are crying for traffic) that are going to send the surfer to a vicious, incredible dangerous hell of a mousetrap and install some shit on their pc if they don't buy anything that are interested in the ad's. I don't think it will be a easy sell with 15-20K / month.
