Anyone get headaches from LCD screens.

A few weeks back I broke down and bought a 22" Samsung LCD monitor. The thing looks awesome but after about 5 mintues my eyes were killing me. I tried every adjustment but I just couldn't use it for more than a few minutes. I took it back, got a HP monitor and the same thing happened, awfull headaches after just a few minutes. I went back and got the original Samsung to give it another go.

I broke out my monitor calibration gadget to make sure everything with the monitor was perfect, made an ICC profile and it still would kill me but I didn't want to give up so I toughed it out. Now I can go about 3 hours but I still get the headaches. I switched back to a CRT but the thing looks like shit after staring at the awesome LCD but at least I can work.

I searched on the internet and found a few people who claim to be allergic to LCD screens but they may be wackos as you can search for any crazy affliction and find people who claim to have it. Just do a search for "my hair hurts" to see what I mean.

So my question is, does anyone else get headaches from an LCD monitor?

Good Day Mynameisjim!!!

If you spend more than 1 hour in front of your workstation and get headaches please go to an eyedoctor to make sure your eyes are OK. Then seek his/her advice on how to manage your eyestrain.

Best of Luck

It's the curse of webmasters. Bad posture, headaches and screwed up eyesight. We're all doomed. It's just something I've come to accept in my life.

I guess there's worse less painful occupations though, like a cat food taste tester maybe? I pity the fool with that job...

Thanks guys,

I did go the eye doctor and everything checked out O.K.

BD, I got the computer specs and they work great with the CRT but no matter what I wear with the LCD screen, I get the headaches for some reason.

I did read some people have sensitivity to fluorescent light which is what is used to backlight LCDs. But I've never had a problem before so I'll give it another go, maybe try to adjust the lighting in my work area.

Hi Jim, It's a long shot but it could be traced back to your house supply from the power company. If the cycle time per second is not right the frequency of flouro flashes maybe the problem. I think your on 50 Hz +/- 2% You should get a sparky to have a look at it just to be sure. Over here it's 60 Hz and in workshops with lathes they had to stop using flouro's altogether cos at some lathe speeds the flouro flashes in sync with the spindle and it fucks with your brain! Years ago a guy lost his arm in an accident because of it.

And there are screen filters you can use. You should be abled to
get one for a 22". I got an ASUS 22 and a Viewsonic 22" without filters and they are great! But they can be hard on the eyes in some settings.

When i converted to dual 22" LCD from 1 19" crt, my eyes were burning after a few minutes too.

My issue was that my monitors refresh rate was too high, was set at 75. I set it to 60 and all eye strain went away.

Worth a shot

I used to. I picked up glasses with anti-glare coating about a year ago and they stopped.
Also helps to not work in dark/dim areas.

Thanks for tips. After reading around it seems like more people than I thought had trouble with LCDs.

I noticed having a decent amount of light behind the monitor helped so I'm going to give my eyes a few days off then try it again.

BTW, I wonder if I can collect disability because staring at naked lady pictures all day ruined my eyes and now I can't work.

Damn you internet porn!! *shakes fist*
