Dedicated vs shared hosting

I have over 50 sites now, spread over 7 different shared hosting accounts. I'm thinking of putting them all on a dedicated server.

What are the big advantages of having a dedicated server?

I'm thinking in terms of higher priority support, greater ease of linking and sharing databases, easier to back up, unlimited domain names.

The worry is I'm putting all my eggs in one basket. Most of my trafffic still comes from link exchanges. If the server is down even for a couple of days, ALL my sites will move to the bottom of the traffic tables and it will take ages to get back up to where I was.

A possible solution might be to have two dedicated servers, one as a mirror of the other. Is there a way technically, to have a domain automaticaly redirect to a different server if there is a problem with the primary server?

Also, any suggestions for a good dedicated hosting package would be most welcome, especialy a non-us company.

go to webair.com

your site will never be down for a couple of days. that's madness. unless of course you perhaps don't check your site regularly?

still go with webair if you want dedicated hosting.

I used to like Webair but every since Mike stood up at Cybernet a couple of years ago and told the audience that they were setting up offshore servers so that webmasters would be protected from 2257 I lost my hardon for them. I still have sites hosted with Webair but I prefer to recommend the company that actually has a presence here on Cozy. I recommend ATCI Hosting

You'll be able to set up a dedicated for around $100 a month and you'll be glad you did.

As to the advantages, with a dedicated you won't ever have to worry that some bonehead that has a site hosted on the virtual box your sites are on doesn't do something stupid and shut down the server, like submitting a gallery to TheHun.

I'm using theplanet and ovh.com (very good european hosting company). It's very comfortable to have dedicated server but this is also a big problem, you have to know how to administrate this. If you are a newbie I'll recommend you to install Debian package.

Yes , this is possible but it costs more.

But I think you will have different problem. You have 50 websites which are linked between each and having them on 1 IP adress isn't good solution.

You don't need to know anything about running a server if you go with a fully managed server. It's also no big deal to use a unique IP for each domain.

Is that for search engine reasons?

Hey how's it going? I think if your looking to save money in the long run dedicated is the way to go. As a Sys Admin myself I am not going to lie and say a server never goes down because no matter who your with a server does go down sooner or later. The best thing you can do is ask your host is to have a backup drive if you do not keep your stuff backed up. Most managed host though will always keep a spare server in case on crashes and needs replacement. If you are with a good host you should never be down for more then an hour, and only an hour if hardware crashes.

If you want to talk more in detail and or have decided to go with a manage server please feel free to contact me on icq @ 254759453 , on aim @ splitjoelp , email joel [at] splitinfinity [dot] com and you can also call me direct any time at 619-395-5229.

Splitinfinity has been around since 1994 so we will not let you down.

Hello Gazza,

What is your reason for considering a dedicated solution vs just staying with what works for you? What are you looking for in the way of improvements over what you have now that works?

I would certainly like to have some of your business placed with Caro.Net, so jst let me know what you want out of your hosting and I will work with you to meet those expectations.
