How Small is Too Small? *grin*

If you are new to the paysite game, and you don't have tonnes of money backing you, how small is too small?

What I mean is, how few photo sets can you get away with? How about videos?

Is it possible to start a paysite with no videos these days?

If you are starting small, is it better to start with a lower monthly fee, and then raise it as you add a lot more content? Or is it better to have one constant price?

Sorry, not doing pay sites yet so anything I say is worthless. But I will say that I got a signup today for a completely recycled site with VERY limited content while my outstanding quality sponsors got jack. I have no idea.

I don't see how one would join a paysite with no video though, just an opinion.

I started two years ago with 8 vids with matching pics.
I didn't get a single sale for two months but I also had very little traffic. I felt like a bit of a rip-off so I put all my sets on the tour page so the surfer knew what he was getting and I still put most of them there to this day.
Why not just throw it up and see what happens and build from there. It can only make you more money than not doing it.
These days I think vids are a must considering who you're competing with. Having said that I get a few members that never look at the vids - only the pics but I suspect they only have dial-ups.

Much will depend on your niche.

If you have a niche that's not too saturated and original pics you can get away with a less. But it is important to keep updates flowing.

We only have a few vids (we are working on that) but we do OK. We're a comparatively small site but seem to be well respected within the niche.

it depends on alot of factors. if you have a sought after niche you can get away with less content but these days there's alot of competition in most niches. yes you can start out without videos but you would have to have lots of really nice, high quality pics and advertise just that.

you definately don't want to lead visitors to believe that you have more than you do. that's a great way to get credit card chargebacks.

you can always start out with a lower sign-up fee until you build up your content. are you buying content or shooting your own? the big money for paysites is in rebills so you need a good size member base and the best way to get that is make members happy with lots of new stuff.

you could always look at it this way: you might as well start, what's the harm. Like Lana said, she started with just 8... you might not get signups, but you're not using bandwidth either.

i think what's more important than the hard number of vids or pics is this: when are you going to be ready to update with REGULARITY?

once you can update with regularity, and demonstrate it - you are ready to get members - imho.

in other words when do you have enough content stockpiled and/or a regular enough production schedule that you can claim to update every day, or every week, or whatever - and actually follow through for a long stretch of time, a year, two years... that's when members will feel good joining.

Put your niche into a search engine, see what sites come up and there is the average size of what you should have.

IMHO Lana was lucky, she's unique and people wanted HER. Yes lucky that she grew up to be so wonderful, . Do you have something that people want as much?
