Full site rip??

Hi.

I was doing a little web searching this evening and I came across a site that had ripped almost all of my videos from my site! It's a torrent site, whatever that means.

http://btjunkie.org/torrent/

Well, I decided to do another search using "site rip" in the search and came across this link:

http://xxxity.com/user/123456/

I scrolled down the list and the person has quite a few sites listed. Is that person advertising that he ripped the contents of Members areas or what? I've never come across that before.

Another question, is there anyway to stop those download programs? I have a download limit for my Members area, which I hate to do (for my legitimate Members) but now that I've seen that site, I'm glad I do have it. Has anyone encountered this before?

Jessica

Hi Jessica!
Get used to it. I've searched the Bit Torrent sites for a while and I'm in there with some pretty good company. Major sites out there are fully ripped.
All I can say for protection is watermark your vids as the rip is usually pretty bad quality and it might entice someone to pay for quality. Also, I immediately cancel any member that's downloading more bandwidth that the site has. I always send a friendly email why and never get a response.
BTW on one of the sites you're talking about - I'm there too.
I just call it advertising because there's nothing you can do about it.
At least you're popular!

This should block most of the site ripping agents. Their are more but you can add to the list as you go along.
If you can stop people stealing your content using the freely available software out their they won't be able to upload it to torrent sites.

Fortunately the vast majority of surfers don't even know Bit Torrents exist. I think most member have a card out to use when they find a site they like and can't be bothered with the hoops to jump through to get it for free. 20-30 bucks is nothing for most of us. Torrents are for kid's who won't have a credit card anyways.

Lana, I agree.

Where I see the problem is in the future you are going to have a whole generation who feel entitled to get media for free.

I know many people think the new business model is to support everything with ad revenue but that has limits, and drawbacks.

Yep, you're right. Fortunately most of my members seem to be "older gentlemen" and the English. The English love lingerie.
I'm in my thirties and have talked to my friends about just this. If they're interested at all they just join. "Torrent what?", they just don't know.
By the time the new generation really catches up, most of us will have hung up our heels and panties anyways. I'll leave that to the up and commers. Things are changing fast but I think most surfers are still old school.

i must admit that i myself use torrents, and rarely if ever pay for porn... but then again i am an affiliate and can see most of what they offer for free. The only time i ever even joined a paysite was to see how they were structured so could market better.

I caught the beginning of the download revolution about 5 years ago and built a hell of a music library (33k songs) and dvd collection (1000+). as the software advances and these kids start to grow up the marketing machine just needs to change. The days of an album going platinum in 2 days are over and the industry has to get a new lease on everything. bands don't write albums anymore they write singles.

i see an age of free media coming, it will be a while, but technology will force it.

umm.. for the record and so the FEDs don't come knocking, everything in the above statement is False

A .htaccess file is simply a file that is saved in notepad as .htaccess and uploaded to the root directory of your website (where your index.htm file is).
The .htaccess file is suberb at blocking ip address, creating redirects and a whole lot more.
The useragents above cover a whole load of full site rippers/ downloaders. These are peices of software that can be downloaded for free and allows the user to copy your entire site and the whole structure, essentially, create a browsable version of your site offline which he can then browse at his leisure (or upload to torrent sites...

Trust me, surfers know torrents exist. Maybe not so much for full porn sites but deffo for music, video and apps.

Thanks for the responses!

Lana--Yeah, I saw your name on the list on that link as well and I figured you'd catch that. And I agree with you, I don't think alot of guys (potential members and current members) know about such programs. Or at least I'd like to think so! Like you, alot of my Members are older gentlemen, and yes some are English and you left out the crossdressers!! Cd's LOVE lingerie! lol

Sharkface---Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for the list!!! I feel like I owe you something now! lol I am going to put it in my .htaccess file but I have a question. If that goes in my root directory, does that stop someone from trying to use it in my Members area as well? These programs can't strip stuff from the Members area, on the free side, can they?

Thanks!

Jessica

BD are you sure you're okay now that you've stopped smoking?

I started reading this thread about how torrents take away from our income; meanwhile there was
also a thread last week or so about pirated software from Adobe, Apple, Macromedia, Avid, etc. and everyone was eager to say that they always actually buy their software instead of getting bootlegs. Yeah right. So, how is this different from torrents? Then you say how much stuff you've pirated, music, film and porn wise. (?!)

OK let's say the age of "free media" comes, then what are we going to do for work? And Pirate Bay's quasi-anarchist ramblings don't really cut it for me.

I do believe half these arguments about free speech / freedom of information is purely bullshit. Picking up a magazine in a store and walking out of it does not qualify as freedom of information.

The internet is no different - I think we all agree there. The reality is it exists, and I think it will only get worst, and as a relative noob to the industry, it really makes me double think my actions in getting into the online adult business. But one can't simply walk on eggshells all the time and eventually must take the plunge - so theres no looking back for me.

What I don't understand is why these torrent sites exist? Who pays for their bandwith and why? I don't see a whole lot of advertising on them - and I can't imagine people who go to a site to illegally rip shit off are in any frame of mind to click on a sponsor and BUY ANYTHING. lol

someone explain this to me dammit!

EDS, good points all around. What I was saying was in response to Balls' statement about the changing face of media, torrents, et al. I brought up the idea about buying a girlie mag at your local newsstand as comparison over the fact that they're (a) behind the counter and/or shrinkwrapped so you don't get a free lunch and what sponsors do is give out so much free shit then it's just like BD said, why even bother siging up for a porn site.

(b) Freedom of information or walking on eggshells? The advice that I got all around from cozy when I first started posting here was - walk on eggshells.

(c) Torrents. How do they make money? No bloody idea. I've read a bunch of articles about Pirate Bay in the past few months. It made it seem like they indeed aren't out to make money, but good point, who pays for hosting etc? In other words, they're lying.

Why do hackers hack sites? Why do assholes create viruses? I'm at a loss for those questions myself.

I can assure you that the Swedish guys claim to be dead serious of changing the idea of copyright etc, but they still benefit up the wazoo. I don't fully recall how they make their money but they make PLENTY despite their socialist crap talk.

I might be wrong but i think torrents are basically P2P. Nobody hosts the the site. I think everybody just stores a bit on there own computer.

you are correct lanna

there are what they call seeders and peers.

a peer has the entire file and uloads the .torrent file (it gives the info on exactly what is in the file, bit size, and MD5 info.

seeders then start to download the file, although they don't all start from the begining of the file. each takes a small 500k sized chunck or so, checks the info is correct and moves onto another 500k chucnk.

torrents work so well because you don't need someone to have the entire file uploaded while you download because eventually you will get the entire thing piece by piece.

any content you see listed on any torrent site has been ripped by a pirate then he has set himself as a peer. evenutally once enough people download the torrent it becomes faster and faster to retrieve the file.

I think.

a) to prove they are smarter than the people administering the network security, to gain confidential info, and of course financial gain

b) to prove they can, it's a hell of a rush to cripple an entire network or create a fast spreading virus that no one can stop, i think its more of an "I'm smarter than you" complex with the viri makers

If its your content / site that is ripped, you need to send a DCMA notice to the owners of the site and the web hosts. You can get a lawyer, like Chad from chadknowslaw.com to do this for you so its done correctly.

Here is some info for xxxity.com

I'm pretty familiar with how torrents work and you explained it really well BD. Essentially its a great system for pirating because there is no one source...much like the internet itself, the beauty of it is that the same information can be on thousands if not millions of seperate hard drives and servers if wanted.

How do you arrest thousands of people downloading a file? How do you persecute that many? P2P will always be a threat to any online media business, I think its here to stay.

What I meant about hosting is, someone still has to host their websites and search engines...those aren't torrent files - their straight up HTML, CSS, PHP etc etc - what I'm curious is who owns them, why they own them, and how do they pay for it? Like I said their prime visitors are people that are computer savvy, and don't like paying for things - so I can't imagine they make a whole lot in marketing dollars or sponsor revenue.

Perhaps its just some eccentric old hippy that won the lottery and is stickin it to the man?
