Wordpress: Double up without another installation?

Ok, this might be hard to explain. I have a freesite that uses wordpress as a sort of content management system.

It updates with posts to the main page that all fit into categories, just like any other blog. However, as the site is not a blog, these "posts" are the main content as it gets added.

Now I would like to also have a blog on the site. I would like to have a link that just says "BLOG" and people can choose to view it.

However, the only way I can see of doing this is to create posts to the blog that will appear along with the main content of the site on the front page, and put them into a Category titled "Blog".

I don't want this. I don't want it listed as a category.

So then I thought I could create it as a page, but there's no way for me to make continual posts to a page in the same form as you can make posts to a category.

Anyone have any ideas, or will I simply have to make a new directory on the existing domain and install a new wordpress to handle the blog part of the site?

I'm not sure I understand 100% but can you not just sticky the posts on your www.domain.com page and add a link to www.domain.com/blog with a fresh blog install.

Sorry if I am miles off

I haven't had a great deal of exposure in WP. But i'm pretty sure that you will have to make a new directory and install a second instance of it as by default WP just acts as a single bog. There may be some plugins to make it act as a 'multi blog', though. I have seen similar things floating around on the web.

Going with another software solution is probably out of the question?

Not sure I get exactly what you want but from what I understand it sounds like you need a second blog install, then RSS the posts into the first blog as a teaser so people click.

Do you need to create a second database as well?

I've decided to go with an entirely new domain and a new install.

But I think if I wanted it on the same site, I would have had to do like maxbeaver said and set up a new directory and a fresh install.

I believe you could use the same database, provided that the table prefixes for the second blog are defined differently than the default in wp-config.php.

for what it's worth at this point, I believe you would indeed need to make a subdirectory for the new blog.. if it were to be on the same site. But of course a stand alone domain is another good fix... lol

I've become WordPress master after the past several months. No other program I've ever encountered is more of a pain in the ass than Word Press.

Why? Because like Microsoft they turn their customers into Beta Testers.

Odysseus has the right answer.

My new problem is another one that no one in the WordPress universe has figured out. I switched hosts recently and my new host has Fantastico Deluxe in it's cpanel but doesn't have a way of upgrading from WP version 2.2.2! Neither does WP. Several suggestions but no luck.

Good thing they were only two blogs. My other four blogs I hadn't started yet I'll have to wait for the host to upgrade to 2.3 which I don't think they'll do because they're scared they'll lose their customer's data. Real funny on tech support line with the company though. Real scaredy cats.

Maybe I'm missing something but why not just upgrade the version through an outside ftp client yourself and not use fantastico?

Maybe you can't but I'm able to use the ftp on my hosts site or the ftp client on my puter, which is Fetch since I have a Mac.

Footman, I know!

Yet with my host it doesn't do that for some reason they can't answer. It got so bad they had to post: "can only be changed manually" on all our WP blogs in our control panels. However trying to do it manually is a fucking chore!

That's what got me. It should have been a simple procedure, actually three simple procedures but NooOOOoooo.

I'll tackle it when I'm done with other artwork to be finished.

Hey man. Not much new here, just had my head down, nose to the grindstone for a bit there. How have you been?

Boonestoons, your host isn't able to let you FTP into your account to update files? For most WP upgrades it's just a matter of uploading / overwriting a few files and going to the upgrade.php file in your browser. Sounds funny to me if your host is having trouble helping you upgrade, and is afraid of loosing data that they should just be able to back up before the upgrade.

Odysseus, I know, it's a pain. That's the first thing I did was update it via FTP and it screwed up. WP didn't have an answer and my host didn't either. They asked ME to figure it out. I guess they're working on it as I'm not the first.

Wow, I'm glad I haven't tried to upgrade anything yet. That does sound like a pain in the ass. Good luck with it.

All good here bro. Trying to get into doing galleries... learning curves suck but it's the price you pay right?
Also going to change the format of my blog a little.

AND I thought of seriously looking into the "For Sale" sign I saw... you heard about it haven't you?

Boonestoons - Who's your host?

I have the mysterious blank page issue. Sometimes when I am in the admin panel trying to do something, the page that loads will be completely blank but say that it's done loading. Other times, you'll see this happen on the front end.

Looking through support, I've found all kinds of things known to cause this issue and tried all of the fixes, and nothing has worked.

The most common cause is the WP-Cache, but I have the patched version. I've ever tried removing it, disabling it, re-installing it, re-patching, and nothing works.

That happened to me once when I upgraded to a newer version of WP. I found that happens when I just upload the new directories trying to "overwriting" the older ones. Then I get the blank screen. When I actually DELETE the old directory first and then upload the new one it always works perfectly. My best guess is that the files that share the same name within the old and new directories get changed but if there are old files in the old directory that don't get written over, those stay and are more than likely the culprit.

I think I complicated that explanation far beyond what was needed. Hopefully I made some sense.

Footman's correct.

See, what I did was deleted the new files and then ftp'd my old files with the new configure files intact. That didn't work either. It should have but didn't. I tried Footman's way first and no luck yet it is a correct way of doing things.

I have the blank page issue on a brand new install on a brand new domain with brand new everything.

No plugins to interfere with anything, no theme yet, no extras.
