Need a social network or similar script/program.

This is for a mainstream project but thought someone here could help.

I need a script or some sort of social network setup (think myspace). I'm not sure if someone has something like this for sale or if maybe there are open source options like with Joomla.

Basically, it just needs to be able to allow users to set up profiles. They can view other profiles and leave messages ect. Plus, I need to be able to send broadcast messages and such as an administrator to all users or specific users.

Would I need to pay to have this custom made or can anyone point me in a direction of a canned application that is close? Either free or for sale.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

jim, you should be able to set up a "myspace" like area with several programs. even wordpress could tackle it if you want to code a template. What are the specific requirements you have? that will narrow down the solutions.

With Joomla you can use Community Builder. Many other components are making themselves compatible with that extension so you have a basket of tools to work with.

Thanks for the resources. I like that Boonex from what I can see, I'll have to look into it more but it might work well.

BD, I never really thought about it but wordpress is capable of some community like features. Probably not right for what I'm doing now but that does give me some ideas for other stuff. As for the specifics, it's really just a social networking site with a twist. I don't want to say just yet what the twist is. I trust you guys but I know there are a lot of lurkers so I at least want to launch it first (if possible).
