Do you use a favicon.ico?
How many of you create and use favicon.ico files?
Do they have to be put in the root folder of a site, or can they reside in a particular folder so they will only affect pages in that folder only? Are there any real benefits to using a favicon.ico? |

I use them, Monica. As long as I can think of a good one for the site I'm doing. I think it depends on your server or host, but I have to use the header code and put one in each sub domain I create.
Here's a good link if you want things done auto http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon/

Cool, thanks guys, all of those links are super handy!
So is there really any reason to have one other than vanity reasons? |

If you're to believe all this web 2.0 social bookmarking stuff, vanity (or "identity", for use of a more positive word) is probably as good a reason as any. As far as porn goes though, it might not be such a good thing. I actually originally started using it to visually sort my favorites more easily.

The favicon helps your bookmark stand out from the rest thus is worth the hassle. Larger sites are also expected to have one nowadays. I recall posting a link to a favicon converter here at Cozy 4 years ago. |
