What's an acceptable bounce rate?
I noticed my site is bouncing 53% off the warning page.
I KNOW I need to modify the warning page into a friendly/prettier doorway and just scroll the legal mumbo-jumbo, but what am I aiming for in terms of a decent bounce rate? I'm not using adwords or paying for traffic as of now, so it's not costing me any capital, but again, what's a good goal rate for a low traffic (1000 uniques a day) bloggy/tgp'ish niche site? Zero?

Pyratas, not really sure what a good bounce rate is as I think it depends on so many factors.
But I know with my mainstream sites I used that metric mainly as a starting point then always looked if changes would bring it down or up. I would say just use the 53% as a baseline then start moving the enter button around, change colors and such and see if it goes down (or up). |

When you say bouncing off the warning page, do you mean people that are choosing to leave the site from there, without checking out the inside of the site at all?
And are we talking about traffic to a blog? And what are the sources of this traffic? |

It all depends on you're traffic and the look of you're page.
The best thing that happens is that the page is designed so the surfer goes directly to a sponsor, and never enter you're site. That means you have a sale, and you don't have to burn unnecessery bandwith. The last thing you want is the surfer to stay forver on you're site without leaving to a sponsor. Traffic is gold, but the traffic it'self is worthless if you can't handle it.

I would expect the bounce rate from the warning page to be relatively high and that's the point of a warning page. When possible, traffic should always be sent to the main page. However, if your warning page isn't enticing and doesn't compel the visitor to enter, they're going to leave.
53% doesn't sound that bad to me from the index page and for general traffic. Now, if it was highly targeted traffic and going to the main page, I'd say you should be shooting for 25% or less. Remember, 99% or more of the porn traffic on the Net is looking for free porn. If they don't land on a page where they can find plenty of it easily, they don't stay around to look for it. How did I come up with 99%? That's the same thing as a conversion rate of 1:100.

I think you need a lower bounce rate if your traffic is coming from decent sources.
You already know how to do it, so I say get on it and see how much that rate drops. |
