Domain name ?
Hi all,
I just got my first check ever (feels good) and I was thinking about getting my own domain name, which will probably ease my life a little bit since the subdomain of my sponsor is blacklisted. It's been a while I think about this but so far I don't even know where I could get one... The only thing I heard is that I shouldn't go with godaddy.com since many, many webmasters where not satisified at all... Anyone can help me ? Because, honestly, lot of people say it IS important. But since I don't like to do something without knowing what it is...Can someone please explain me how they work, how they cost and such other useful information ? Maybe give me some links too, |

Godaddy is just fine for registering domain names. I think the webmasters that were having problems were the ones that were actually trying to host porn sites with Go Daddy, some people have problems with that.
I have all my domain names with godaddy and its fine. However there are lots of others such as Register.com is another big one. The domain name is just used to point users to your site. It doesnt cost that much, some hosting plans include it with your server and others do not. I hear that its a good idea to have your hosting name with one company and your server with another, keeping them separate incase your server company goes broke and leaves you high and dry. The cost can vary. If you go for a year it usually is about 9 dollars, and if you go for more years it obviously goes up but they try to give you a deal, saving a few bucks in the long run. Also companies like godaddy can give you additional options like private registration so if someone does a whois on your account your personal information isnt displayed but instead a general go daddy message instead.

Godaddy is perfectly fine for getting your domain name! Just make sure you supply accurate whois and contact information when you register it. We also would recommend not buying your hosting and domain from the same company. Best of Luck!

i haven't heard of a single webmaster with issues registering domain names with godaddy. (I register all my domain names with godaddy)
Now hosting with godaddy is a completely different story. I have heard some nightmare stories lately. i would recommend registering your domain name and hosting your site with separate companies.

I visited goddady.com. They seem to have fair prices, it's true it's not that costy but they also try to push full of other stuff in, like paying e-mail addresses (Might be a good idea, I don't know...I suppose that a a contact address with name somesite.support@hotmail.com might sound unprofessional...), hosting plans which I don't need and tons of other features like encryptions and such.
Should I follow their tips and get an e-mail address as well as more than one domain name (like ***.com and ***.net) ? Or should I go with only one ?... Sounds complicated for a first-timer and I wouldn't want to waste the little money I have which means something around 75$... ![]() TIA, You're of great help |

The company you are hosting with should be able to provide you with your email addresses, among many other options and features!!!! No reason to spend unnecessarily for all the upsells and upgrades offered through Godaddy. Really all you need them for is to register your domain! Best of Luck!

I personally just get the section option, the private domain registration. It just hides my personal information from the WhoIS when someone does a lookup on my domain name. They could get my info if they actually call godaddy but I doubt many people would do that.
So it costs me a little more, think its 18 bucks a year for a domain name, if you dont really care that your phone number nad address appear in a whois then yeah just go for the cheap one, I wouldnt buy all those extra domains either like them trying to through .biz .net etc on your domain... unless you are building a paysite and you really really want to have control of most of the domain names

my advice would be
1. Register a domain name with godaddy (.com only) (don't use hyphens in the site address) 2. Pick a hosting company and plan. You should be able to find a very good plan for $10-$15 bucks a month. no need to buy anything else to get started, e-mail and a ton of other features will all come with the hosting package.

Thanks for the tips, I'll get only a domain name as for the e-mail address, I'll look into getting one from my sponsor.
Also I have all I need with the hosting provided by my sponsor. I'll just have to contact them about how to forward the DNS or something like that. I hope to fly someday on my own (no more sponsor and 50% share with them...) but for the time being, let's say I am still learning to walk. Thanks again, |

I know it's a bit off topic but,
When will I know it's time to get my own hosting ? Yesterday when I took a look at my check, I was asking to myself, when does it ends ? I mean, for now I'm with a sponsor and since recently, I thought that apart from those ultra-rich people who buy hosting, domains, templates and such, it was the only way someone without much money could go but it seems I was wrong. I was looking at the "best site" list couple of months ago and I thought those webmasters where at the top. I also thought that someday, my site too would appear on that list. Now I just see this "best site" list as a further step on the ladder... Now I wonder, what is the top ? It's strange, sorry to sound...weird but if someone can answer me... |

You answered your own question in your first post when you said your sponsor's subdomain had been blacklisted.
Hosting will cost you less than $10 a month. How much thought does that take? If you're serious about making money in this business and don't want to spend $10 a month, I can guarantee you that you'll never get anywhere.

Getting your own hosting is definitely the next step. If you are already making some money and seeing cheques, no matter how much or how little that is, you are already light years ahead of many webmasters starting out in this business.
With your own hosting, you'll be free to set up all kinds of websites and promote any sponsor you like. You don't want to put all of your eggs in one basket. What if your current sponsor suddenly disappears? |

Godaddy is great for domain registration. Just make sure you accurately complete the who is data. Those that had problems used fake who is data and had no way of proving the domain was their's after it was stollen. Host your website elsewhere for $10 / month. This alone will increase your income.

GoDaddy is fine for registering domain names. Just ignore all of their other services as you go through the checkout process.
Once your domain is registered, make sure you "lock" it. This is free. Locking means that you will be emailed and will need to approve any changes to the domain record, and the domain will not be transferred to another registrar without your approval. Also free is GoDaddy's "CashParking". If you register a domain name and don't have time to launch a site right away, you can set up cash parking for free. You will get a share of any click-throughs. Another registrar I like very much is namecheap.com. I've had zero problems with namecheap.com and godaddy.com. Basically, I use GoDaddy for buying domains from other people, and namecheap.com for registering domains I come up with on my own. I use GoDaddy primarily for buying domains because a) that's where a lot of sellers register names because of the price, and b) "pushes" (domain transfers) from one GoDaddy account to another are free and very easy. Another feature to look at is URL Forwarding. GoDaddy and Namecheap both provide this free. You can forward a URL like www.myhotporndomain.com to www.somesponsor.com/affiliateID, for example. |
