You know it's a problem when I get to 'cartoon cussin''.

Wordpress should be easy to install.

Right?

Wrong.

There are tutorials all over the place showing how to install something that's supposed to take 5 minutes! WordPress' own website has some inhuman number of posts about how to install it properly.

I have 4 hosting companies and 3 out of 4 had the MySQL properly installed and that was easy. Just 1-2-3. Try installing WordPress and you gotta go through who knows what.

I figured it was just l'il ol' me until I went to their website and saw the mountain of installation questions.

I reviewed 8 different tutorials from various 'high named' websites and each one missed a procedure or used some outdated shit.

One big time site even had a link to a simple visual tutorial but when you click on the link it takes you to some chick's blog about her brother winning some tard ass award and then the page doesn't lead anywhere! How stupid is that?

This is typical of so many programs where the tutorials are written by geeks for geeks. They use that 'mental telepathy' program that the end user is supposed to be able to read their minds and never mind the simple instructions they're supposed to write out.

I'll have the error corrected by the end of the day but this is so a waste of my time.

Personally I think Wordpress is extremely easy to install and is an amazingly good program... especially considering it's, ummm... free.

yeah, that's what I've been reading and it should be easy to install. However, that's if the hosts you have have things set up right. I had to go in and correct 2 hosts in order for me to install the damned thing.

Correcting the host ain't my job. I'm the customer.

One of my hosts is a big mainstream host. I remember when they were small. Some people get successful in life and get a big head forgetting that the road to success is a slippery one and a big head busts open louder when you fall.

Humpty Dumpty found out the hard boiled way.

I found it pretty straightforward as well and think the program is awesome, especially for the price. Not to mention all the plugins, also free.

Only issues I have come up with where database quirks with a couple hosts and not wordpress itself.

Once you give it a chance I think you will come around and really start to admire Wordpress.

That means there are at least 4 hosts worse than mine. Wordpress is about the only thing that still installs correctly since their recent upgrades

Bingo. That's what I'm running into. Some work, had to walk others through and just got word from one of my big hosts. He didn't know about wordpress. I'll see how that fares.

I have a HUGE audience potential for blogging as several pals have some of the biggest mainstream sites out there and have been offering me to write and do editorial toons. Once I get the program installed, drill and study and drill again I should do quite well across the board especially from my radio and television contacts.

They've been asking me about doing adult toons and want to do a tv news special about adult toons but I have to seriously think about it.

In part Hammer, in part. WordPress looks awesome and it's free. You can't beat that combination.

Often a program and a host or whatever have to be tweaked for each circumstance. The problems I'm solving today are problems numerous other people have been having for a long time I've been reading. So when I'm done I'll do my own tutorial.

Funny side note, a popular game called Half Life 2. Awesome game and one of the characters is the hottie heroic daughter of the main scientist in the game. Of course there was a nude skin out but suddenly it was impossible to find and a pain to install. I had to do my due diligence to not only find the non corrupted file but also how to bypass the installation program to properly install it. Once successful I put up a visual tutorial and links to it.

Well quite the interesting day finding out about WordPress and installation.

Anyhow with two hosts I've got it installed. Here's one blog for adult stuff:

I installed it easily with one host and a pain with the other. For this blog I just used a simple theme so the focus is on the content and any ads I put up there. I'll have to end up making my own toon based theme and will do that soon.

Several things happened today installing WordPress. Not all in one spot either. Some problems were with browsers, some with servers, some with people just asleep at the wheel. I knew I was following the instructions properly so when it didn't work I had to backtrack.

After installing, then going to the options area and futzing around with it. I'll have it optimized for maximum ads, posts, links etc. by weekend is over hopefully.

See, that was one of the major problems. WordPress 'assumes' your host can do this or that when they meet the requirements, however, each hosting company responds differently. I had my MySQL databases set up at the same time for four different hosts. Only two responded properly. The final two it's some sort of time delay due to browser this or that nonsense.

So you can have all your ducks in a row but the host has to also.

That's a large number of problems people run into I'm reading on the boards regarding set up.

So now I can run my own tutorial and hopefully it will help others. I love doing tutorials that are crisp and clear. It pisses off the geeks.

wordpress is pretty easy to install.
if you don't have ssh, have your host do the following:


cd /usr/local/apache/sites/clientXXX/domain.com/htdocs


wget http://wordpress.org/latest.tar.gz

tar -xvzf latest.tar.gz

rm -rf latest.tar.gz

cd wordpress

cp -R * ../ (to install to doc root)

cd ..

rm -rf wordpress

chown -R clientXXX.clientXXX *

vi wp-config.php

http://domain.com/wp-admin/install.php


obviously fill in the correct FTP user and domain as needed.

Hi Boony, WP can be a pain if your not using a good FTP program. 6 months ago I was in a similar position trying to do WP installs and most of the problems where due to the FTP program! Stick with it and you will be OK......or not!

Instead of using hosts that you don't know for sure are WordPress friendly and getting frustrated when they aren't, the smart thing to do is to use hosts that are, like ATCI Hosting .

If you use multiple hosts, that's great, but it would sure save a lot of grief if you just identified the hosts that made installing WP simple and stuck with those hosts for your blogs.

With ATCI it's as simple as clicking a link in the control panel.

Hammer you're right!

I use more than one host for my sites as I don't like to keep all my eggs in one basket.

After a day of troubleshooting the bugs to installing have been worked out.

I'll write up a new visual tutorial for people who run into the same problem on my site's "how do I?" page.

Thanks for the tip on the hosting company. I'll make sure to check them out.

One of these days you should lemme do a toon interview with you for my blog. I think it would be a riot and you could promote your stuff. I hope you're not camera shy!

I'm already getting some healthy traffic to the blog and I ain't even started yet. Just wait a few days. I'll be putting up my first art poll to my blog as I ask the surfers to help me pick which toon to use for an ad campaign.

And if something should break down the road, don't always assume it's your fault.

Sometimes a routine upgrade by your host, without your knowledge, will break your site. I just had that happen with a mainstream site of mine, where I couldn't login as admin anymore. Spent hours thinking the mySQL db had gotten screwed up, but in reality the host had switched a setting on me.

Also be sure to upgrade WP as new versions come out and security issues arise.

WordPress management looks like a full time job on it's own.

Each host is different and I've had to discover on my own how to modify the WP script for each host. WP tutorial doesn't tell you this. That was my point all along.

I can't tell you how many times I've had to debug someone else's software or tutorial or whatever. I should be getting paid for this.

So I have WP installed on 3 hosts now and the 4th later today.

That will suffice til new domains are bought and up and running.

Ahhh, now the designing my own theme fun begins!

wordpress themes aren't that difficult. Traffic from the blog already is good and growing. Can't wait til this week coming as I expect some fun things to happen.

I've had a fucking pain in the ass with my wordpress. I use ATCI also, but trying to get things going hasn't been easy.

I'm still up shit creek without a paddle actually. I tried installing from the cPanel, but then you need to go in and ftp an index page and upload .htaccess to get it to work right. Then some of the strings in the code won't allow it to link properly within the admin area of wordpress. Something ATCI had to do for me, but god damn, you'd think it would be much simpler.

My latest gripe is that I couldn't get sidebar widgets to work with 2.1 so I tried uploaded the new wordpress 2.2.1 with built in widgets and those fuckers won't work either! Tried Sidebar Modules also, and get an error with that which tells me I have to input a valid module title.

Leatherandlace, you sound like many WordPress users.

I'm taking things on a reasonable gradient.

Three of my hosts have cpanels and I had to find out there were two commands in the config file I had to change that went against what was said were the standards.

I'm learning that like all programs and procedures there's not just a "one fits all".

Now I'm studying it far more than I had expected or wanted to but I can't do things half assed. I have to make more money and fast and so far the blogging is proving itself and I'm nowhere near done yet.

I'm in one of those weird positions where if I make a few grand more I can set up retirement for life. If doing blogs builds that up I'm gonna be bloggin'. I have some kick ass art and toons to do adn didn't want to spend so much time studying WordPress as I have like 5 high end animation/3D-CG programs to study as well.

Yet quality cannot be secondary so I'll have to suffer through studying WordPress.
