Interesting surfer statistics
I was checking Google analytics for my blog this morning and found some of the stats to be very interesting.
Browsers: Firefox - 71.03% IE - 25.54% Screen resolutions: 1024x768 - 36.71% 1280x1024 - 19.46% 1280x800 - 15.04% 1140x900 - 6.4% 800x600 - 4.18% Very large monitors - 13.3% Connection speed: Cable/DSL - 86.30% Corporate - 5.5% (probably broadband) Dialup 5.08% Unknown - 3.03% Java enabled - 98.9% I'm sure that everyone's stats will vary slightly, but based on these stats, I'd say we should design for 1024x768 and broadband and stop worrying about surfers that turn off javascript. I think the Firefox percentage is particularly interesting.

I agree with you on the 1024 Hammer... I think designing for 800 is almost like catering to the 3rd world countries that don't buy anyway. I think maybe you flip-flopped your IE and FF numbers there ;-)

Nope, those are the correct IE and FF numbers and that's why I was surprised.

That is a shocker to me...I guess the blogging crowd embraces FF more than the general population. My numbers are usually near 80-20...IE to FF. FF has been growing though...

from Saturday when I had a pretty substantial amount of traffic...
Browsers: IE6 40% IE7 27% Netscape5 21% Safari 2% IE5 1.5% Netscape4 1% Operas 1.5% The Netscapes are mostly FireFox users... OSs: WindowsNT 86% (mostly XP) Mac 4% Windows 98 4% These are dedicated server stats so they should be pretty accurate.

Hammer uses Google analytics? I remember talking about it in your chat room when it first became available and you frowned on using it...
I've used analytics since way back when I got my first invitation. Aside from server stats, they are the next best thing in free stats.

I agree with KP...Google Analytics is sweet. It even shows stuff my Wusage is not capable of. Only issue is loading that damn script on every page...

I think that people who read blogs are more inclined to use FF because there are buttons all over most blogs encouraging its use.
Thanks for the stats Hammer. I was pretty sure that 800x600 resolution was almost dead. |

I stopped designing for 800 X 600 a while back. Even if people still use it my thinking is that they have to be familiar with scrolling every website they visit so I doubt you will lose those visitors.
As for the Firefox vs. IE, I think Hammer's stats are a little bit of an anomoly and reflect more about his core audience as opposed to the web in general. |

Most webamsters/geeks/whatever are at Hammers blog so i do not anyone should change the way to think.
I have 3 sites directed towards webmasters, and they all are well above 80% FF ... all other sites are appx. on 80-90%IE. ![]() There are still ~30% that surfs on a 800X600 resolution. You might not loose them, but it is not nice to sidescroll

Yeah, the stats for my others sites show FF users to be between 30% and 40% so I was surprised to see the high FF percentage for the blog. It shows that different demographics require different approaches.
You must have a lot of European traffic, Viking, because none of my sites show anything close to 30% using 800x600. I usually see something around 8%. Balls, my blog caters to surfers too, although probably a more high brow group than the average porn surfer. I think the stats show that porn sites get a ton of Chinese and other foreign traffic that are using outdated equipment as well as kids that are probably using computers that are their parent's hand-me-downs.

My 800x600 stats have been around 5% for over a year now.
I stopped catering to them a while back when I saw yahoo, msn and a couple large news sites switch to 1024. They can either upgrade, adjust their moniters or scroll. I think they are used to scrolling at this point. Heck my home machine is 1920 wide. I can nearly put 2 1024 sites side-by-side. As for firefox, I see about 60% use on blog sites, and abot 15% on all my others. Most blogs just cater towards firefox a little better. I know I usually need to update the css in wordpress template to work with ie.
