MPG, FLV or WMV for hosted gals? And why?

I am really confused on which format to follow for future projects, so I will be glad if you give me an idea which of these formats do you prefer for Hosted Galleries;

1- FLV Hosted Gallery Sample

2- MPG Hosted Gallery Sample

3- WMV Hosted Gallery Sample

The Flash movies are definitely preferable in terms of aesthetics, however you need to determine ,What is the bandwidth load iro each format?

Of the 3 formats I think the WMV has the smaller file size.

Flash has the most smaller size actually.

There are very few sponsors using Flash video on FHGs. You see very little Flash at all in adult websites. I like .wmv files myself but .mpegs do have the advantage that they cannot be embedded and stolen like .wmv and are a bit more universal for the MAC crowd.

Bit of an old post but I had a question on it.

I was playing around with an mpg, and I made one using wmv's. But I'd like to have the tube style flash players. Which would be best between to two different formats I have on this temp Test page?

I have 12 clips 10 seconds each, so they don't take much time to download, in that respect, I do like wmvs, and the fact that when downloaded they are nice, big videos.
But in the bandwidth costs, I prefer flvs because they take up about a quarter of the space.

Anyhoo, I would keep the flv the way it is and have some sort of rollover that would make them bigger so a surfer can click to preview, but I'm not about to add a script to my mgps and get myself blacklisted.

Another option I would have would be to splice 3 clips together and have 4 different decent size flvs, but I'm not sure about that yet.


Or...I could just keep the wmv

I don't even take into account bandwidth with regard to fhg's, a ten second wmv file at 640 x 480 can easily be approx. 1.5 mbs to 2mbs. 320 x 240 at 20 seconds would probably be around the same size, so with 3-4 sample clips on a page you're looking at around 5mbs, nothing to be troubled with. I think 3mbs is a good limit per sample, anything past that is not problematic, but the quicker load time the better.

Mpegs tend to have better quality, wmv's are by far the most favorable and easiest for surfers to use. I am seeing more flash based sample pages, of course you can get away more easily with going 20-30 second clips.

Well housekeeper, I do take bandwidth into account. The first sample WMV I made, someone hotlinked to them and was using around 4 gigs of my damn bandwidth a day!

Luckily WMV files show up as a page in my stats so I saw it. (btw, if the person that did that is seeing this, don't bother trying again cause I'll just keep changing the URL.)

But i do want to learn more about flash and use that more. Plus it's cool to have that screen like youtube you can just click and see it, as opposed to how it opens a new window and page like WMV does.

damn, I better keep an eye on my bandwidth, to make sure I dont get in the same type of situation, especially cuz I'm poor and can't really afford to get fucked over due to bandwidth, And I also like the youtube type of vid a browser can just click on, I started messing around with flash so I could try it out myself.

Hey Bill,

If your talking about the type of Flash I use on my tour page, I use a nifty little program from Moyea http://www.moyea.com/ There's a lot of them out there but Moyea compresses very well and has by far the sleekest looking controls.
I know because I downloaded tons of trials and it was the best for the money.
You just cut your vid in WMV the import into the flash program and convert. Then in Dreamweaver or whatever just go Insert>Flash Media and drop in the SWf file. It'll just be a gray box until you "preview in browser".

That is unfortunate, perhaps it's time you contacted Ray from bettercgi and find out if 'throttlebox' can be configured into your blog. Off hand I don't see why not, then your worries would be behind you...
