Blog Traffic, and also Fleshbot

I came across an interesting article about blog traffic (not just porn) in I think it was New York Magazine. I can't seem to find it in my history but if I do, I will post it. Basically, the news was not so great, but also nothing I didn't know before, though the point is to persevere despite the odds.

They had some researcher from Harvard or MIT or something comment on why certain blogs rise to prominence and some get lost or cannot and will not ever make it to the top. What he said was that you could divide the blogs the same way Hollywood has A, B & C list actors. Once you hit the A-list and there is enough of an A-list pool, it becomes so entrenched that people stick to what they know and what they're comfortable with and that A-list pool becomes impenetrable.

I suppose the same thing is applicable to TGPs and why they're practically obsolete as a revenue source. Now it looks like blogs are heading in the same direction - or are they? There's the whole "web 2.0" thing I guess.

Question #1: What are you bloggers doing to try to break out of the mold of just bombarding people with free porn? Not asking you to give away your secrets, just wanted to open up a discussion about this.

Question #2: Since Fleshbot is probably the #1 sex blog I can think of, how do they get away and/or not worry about 2257? Is it just because they're owned by Gawker and have lawyers on retainer 24/7?

I'm not aware of the article you are talking about but I'm assuming they were talking about political and social blogs such as Daily Koz and others. Those are in an elite circle and somewhat trusted. If you think you can create a political commentary blog and after a month it will be the talk of the town well, that's just crazy anyway.

Porn blogs are all splogs or spam blogs IMHO. Nobody searches for porn to read about it, they want to see it. Now if you want, you can create a blog that is interesting to read and then sell something peripherally and that does work well in mainstream and I'm sure it will work in porn but it won't start to pay off for some time since you will need to build a readership while a splog can land a sale the day it's launched. Based on that a formula for distributing your efforts should start to take shape.

They also talked about splogs, and there was another article in Wired about splogs but it wasn't as informative. Yes, they mostly talked about political/social blogs, Andrew Sullivan being one of the examples but they also talked about Fleshbot several times.

I'm running one blog so far and making a bit of cash from it. Nothing too impressive as of yet. I'm going to follow the advice that I believe Viking posted before and build some feeder blogs on free hosts. But then will I see the same problem i.e. giving away too much free shit?

I was also thinking about adding a blog to my TGP which has suckass conversions (but does have some), but now I think that may defeat the purpose of a blog (more enticing, more personal, less free shit).

Most porn blogs are spam, you are correct. And those may get a few sales a day but Fleshbot gets 500K+ visitors a day and it's not spam and those people are millionaires. Their writing IS great but does this mean that quality wins? Or should we just pollute the internet further?

Jim, can you post a link to what you think is a good or even average splog?

Also, I've been putting in technorati tags on my posts but making them invisible. I ping and ping with each post and I still don't see any hits coming in from technorati or icerocket through my statcounter. Any suggestions?

Hey phuckbunny, how is it that we both question the same things at the same time? weird.

Anyway, I'm really interested in how i set up this feeder network to my blogs. I've made some blogs but i don't understand how they are going to gain SE relevancy (the hand written ones) without updates as i have read that most people here on cozy do not touch their feeder blogs or splogs once set up? Is this an RSS only option?

sadly, google is lacking in the porn traffic network department

Wow, viking. 22K of just google traffic? Impressive. Now I'm not asking you to givee away your secrets but can we define definitiveely what a splog is? If that 22k of traffic is coming from just google searches, is a splog just filled with gibberish like "britney spears naked" and whatever else people google these days?
