I'll never understand google.
I have one blog which I update everyday for the past 3 months. No blackhat, just 15 recip links and all hand written posts and it gets penalized by google for whatever reason as it doesn't even appear as number one for it's own URL and traffic is down to a trickle.
Another blog for the same very popular sponsor which is all RSS fed garbage now ranks #3 for the sponsor name and is getting crazy traffic. Go figure. Sorry, had to rant. |

I'm convinced Google doesn't undertstand Google. Every so often they twiddle with it, all the results get shuffled round a bit so they sit back all smug and confident and pretend it was deliberate.

I read something about this earlier, thanks for the links though.
What this proves is that the engineers at Google have no idea how to deal with people gaming their crappy algorithim so they are just going to put the burden on webmasters to do their work for them. Problem is, according to their rules almost all legitamate linking will be frowned upon. It's funny, Google has always said to not do anything only for the purpose of effecting the search engines but now they want you to do your own www non www fixes, make paid links no-follow, etc. Which is it?? |

Those time they had to develop their algorithms to fit to the sites made on the web. Now google has grown big and strong, and can actually develop algorithms that webmasters have to follow when they make sites. Offcourse, all is done in good for the surfer (read: make more money for google), and personally i will belive their algorithms will raise and kick them in the balls. Thay are not alone as search engines out there, and adsense is not the only viral marketing program out there, so i would've started to take lighter footsteps if i was in charge of google. (Offcourse....the result is that google will control everything on the web in the end though anyway...) |

I agree. Many people like to compare modern day Google to the the monopoly Microsoft had in the early days but I think Google's hold on the search market is very shaky and nowhere near the hold Microsoft had on the OS market in the 90's. Google has ONE profitable product, that is adwords and it accounts for over 95% of their revenue. In all this time they have yet to introduce another product that is innovative or even makes money. Heck, they didn't even invent PPC, Yahoo did.

I've never asked anyone to put a link back to my site on any site we've designed and never offered a discount as an incentive to do so and never will, but I wish someone could explain to me what would be wrong with that if someone did.
Suppose I design a website for you and you are really happy with it and want to give me credit so you put a 'designed by' link on the site someplace? Or suppose when I design the site for you I tell you I'll give you a 10% discount if you allow me to put a 'designed by' link on the site? What would be wrong with doing either of those things and why in the world does Google think they have the right to penalize anyone that does it? It's done in the advertising world all the time. I am just wondering on how an algorithm can see the difference between a "support" or "paid" link and a link that you actually appreciate on youre site when they all are just hardlinks nevertheless.
If this is some kind of manual report "thingy" i think we are looking at the worst "report my compititors" ever. Time to start to build for the 2 others i guess
