Arg... domain still down
This is really getting on my nerves. My one site is up but my other new one is down.
Upsets me as to how many people came and left due to this since I spent all last night getting it out into the gigerweb and I wonder how long its been down for. Was out all day so who the fuck knows. Just venting. |

I think its the DNS. Load my domain and I get my godaddy parked page.
When I access by IP, the page loads, but its all messed up. Not sure whats going on but in contact with support now and have already sent them a tracert. Does it work for anyone else? http://www.myvirtualdancers.com |

I'm getting it fine.
Did you change the nameservers recently. DNS changes are much faster than in the past but sometimes can still take a day to fully propagate. |

works for me and worked all day yesterday.
i had this same problem about 2 months ago, i could see the domain but others could not, or vice versa. It ended up being an issue with the nameservers not updating properly at the host. contact your host if you are still having problems. Once i made them aware of the error it was fixed within an hr.

Okay, I need the help from all you domain savvy people since my 6 year old MCSE is failing me right now.
So after contacting my hosting company, they have informed me that it’s not a problem on their end. I have sent them many ping and tracert results but still they say it’s not their issue and to contact my ISP. Funny thing is that I work for my ISP in tech support so I can check things here easily. What it looks like is that at random times throughout the day, my domain resolves to GoDaddy instead of my hosts nameservers. Since I am at work right now, I followed packets out from my home PC through the network and from what I can tell; they are leaving my ISP's network fine. I went to GoDaddy and the A record listed was their parked nameserver. I deleted the A record and my site came back up but still at random times, it doesn't resolve properly. I thought that since it’s not resolving properly, its got to be a DNS issue, but sometimes I can access my site at work, then I remote into my home PC and its not working there. When its not working, I check the DNS and its resolving to GoDaddy and not my host. When my one site isn't working, I check my other site which is on the same host and on the same account. Both names are registered at GoDaddy with the same nameserver information. The only difference between the 2 sites is the IP address. When my one site is down, the other one works just fine. Other people say they can access it fine when I can’t so most likely im not loosing traffic, but if I can't access my site, I can't update it. Thoughts? Just trying to figure out where the problem is so I can look into getting it fixed. |

this sounds like the exact problem i had. I could see one domain on the same server but not the other. It was a host issue but took some convincing, they gave me the same first initial reply. the key is to do a traceroute when you can't see the domain. If you can see it you aren't showing where it is dropping off.
do you have another isp choice? compare the trace routes or take a screenshot of the traceroute on the isp that works, then switch ip's and take another screenshot proving that it is not found. that will get the host moving.

You can always eliminate one problem although it will cost you a few bucks.
Transfer your domain somewhere else, update the records and see if still happens the next day. If everything is fine then the problem was the dns with the registrar. If it still happens you know it's the host. Only do this if you totally can't figure it out though. |

Thanks you two for the information.
BD, I don't know anyone else who is with another ISP right now, all with the one I work for . I was starting to doubt myself when my current host keeps emailing me back saying I must be sniffing glue or something LOL.Jim, I do have another host and domain, but they are non-adult hosting, but what I was thinking was this. In GoDaddy, I have my adult hosts nameservers, then the GoDaddy ones. What I was thinking is to put my non-adult hosts name servers after my adult ones but before the GoDaddy. That way, if its not resolving properly to the adult one, then my non-adult should resolve and get that site. God that didn't make sense writing it out, but in my warped head it does. I think

maybe thats your problem
only put your host ns1 and ns2 servers on the list.. err that is if you mean you have 4 nameservers listed for your domain. if you mean just switch the domain and put up a fake index page on godaddy. that should work, as long as you are currently unable to view the page, otherwise i don't know how you'd check it.

That's probably the problem. All 4 name servers are not responding to DNS queries for your domain. Better renew that MCSE.
Remove Godaddy's parked name servers and only use those provided by your host. Or you have other options... Don't use your hosts name servers and use only Godaddy's and in the advance DNS settings manually configure the records. Or use ZoneEdit.com's name servers which is what I use. Or have a few more beers!

My domain seems to be on a roll, been up for a few hours now for me, but still keeping an eye on it. Thanks everyone for the nameserver information, will strip it down to just 2 and keep watching. Never thought that would be a problem though to have more than 2 nameservers, but as KP said, my MCSE is out of date

if the files for your domain are not on the server you are pointing to then the surfer is going to come up 404.
2 nameservers are all you need, make sure you are using the nameservers from the host with your files on it.
